Did you know? This Sunday marks Lamington Day, celebrating over a century of this iconic Aussie treat! 🍰

Legend has it that Lamingtons were named after the Governor of Queensland, Lord Lamington. It all began when his favorite yellow sponge cake was accidentally dropped into melted chocolate by a maid-servant during a party. Ever since, these delightful chocolate-coated cakes with coconut shavings have become a beloved part of Australian culinary heritage.

Join us at the Telegraph Station Museum Café for a slice of history and tradition and indulge in our Lamingtons this weekend.

Throughout the school holidays you can witness how nails were hand made in the not-so-distant past. Our blacksmith Shaun will be forging between 9am-12pm on Saturdays – come and see for yourself on 22nd & 29th June and 6th & 13th July!

In the late 1800’s supplies for the Telegraph Station came from Adelaide to Central Australia generally once a year. Heavy items associated with blacksmithing were often reduced in quantity or not included in preference for more essential items – such as food!

The blacksmith at the forge was the hardware supplier throughout the 1800’s and early 1900’s – if an item made from iron was broken, he would either have to repair it or fabricate a new one. This would range from kitchen utensils, tools and equipment, fittings and items for the buildings, nuts, bolts and much more.

The blacksmith had to make do with whatever material was available, the ultimate recycler! Historically it was not uncommon for scraps and offcuts of iron or old horseshoes to be reforged into bars for nail-making.

You'll get to see our in-house blacksmith melding the past with the present in the historical smithy building.

The sessions will run from 9am to noon, today, tomorrow and Saturday, so you'd better strike while the iron's hot.

All ages are welcome, with free entry for locals. Come on down and spark some joy with us this weekend!

150 YEARS……Today is an historic anniversary for a historic moment in Australia.
On the 22nd August, 1872 the Overland Telegraph Line was fully connected across Australia, from north to south.
Visit Laurie the Morsecodian at the Telegraph Station this week who is here to celebrate this great feat and share his unique skills in sending Morse.

Who is faster, Laurie on the Morse key or you on the SMS on your phone?

It was the internet before the internet and it changed the country forever, built in a race against the clock and the harsh elements of the outback to connect Australia to the globe.
