In northwest Argentina’s picturesque heart, the Salinas Grandes (Great Salt Flats) sprawl some 212km over the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, creating a shining white desert garnished with striking turquoise pools.

Not only is this the world’s third largest salt flat, it’s one of Argentina’s Seven Natural Wonders – a must-see on your next visit to this lesser-known highlight of Latin America.

Each Make Travel Matter Experience in our growing collection has been handpicked to ensure it aligns with at least one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, all for the betterment of communities, the planet and wildlife. And when you visit Cusco as part of our 14-day Authentic Peru journey, you’ll feel the satisfaction of giving back with a Make Travel Matter culinary experience at Mama Seledonia’s restaurant, which employs talented single mothers from underserved communities.

Founder Seledonia Montalvo begins your workshop with a visit to the produce market, where you’ll pick up some of Cusco’s indigenous ingredients (like potatoes, corn, quinoa, beans, rice and pork), before joining her in the kitchen to create delicious local classics, making for a memorable experience to savour on many levels.

Our Make Travel Matter experiences directly support the environments we visit and offer you a deeper, unique connection to the communities and wildlife we encounter along the way.

As part of our Authentic Borneo collection, for example, you may visit the Sepilok Rainforest Discovery Centre – a lush, vast stretch of jungle adjacent to the legendary Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, which is on a mission to highlight and preserve endemic plant species.

Here, a canopy walk can lead to wild encounters: it’s home to 222 mammals, including 44 found nowhere else on Earth; 420 bird species and 15,000 different types of plant. Keep an eye out for wild orang utans, hornbills and, if you’re visiting at dusk, flying squirrels, as they emerge from their nests to take to the skies for the night. Unforgettable!

As nature lovers, it’s rewarding to know we can Make Travel Matter just by visiting grassroots conservation projects on our travels.

Adventure World’s Asia/Indian Subcontinent Product Manager, Eric Finley, recently visited Wildlife SOS in Agra, India. Here, Himanshu and the team are at the forefront of rescuing and rehabilitating elephants and bears, and are working hard to support their wild populations by working against illegal trafficking.

Wildlife SOS started out by rescuing dancing bears, and in 2009 the last dancing bear was removed from the streets; today the centre is home to 110 sloth bears as well as many other animals, who live peacefully inside expansive forested enclosures. The centre has also led Asian Elephant conservation since 2018 – with only 22,000 left in the wild, their work has never been more important, and there are 30 individuals currently in their care.

By visiting Wildlife SOS on your next Indian holiday, you’re directly supporting their projects and improving the lives of some of the planet’s most iconic animals.

When you create a bespoke itinerary with Adventure World, the Make Travel Matter Experiences you choose may just end up being the highlight of your trip. Because, not only do they lead you to a deeper sense of connection to the communities, places and wildlife we visit, they also give back to them, leaving a positive impact in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

One such standout experience is our Grizzly Bears of the Wild tour on Canada’s Vancouver Island, where you’ll set off on a wildlife expedition with members of the KwaKwaka’wakw First Nations community, who offer their unique perspective on culture and conservation while sharing their wildlife expertise.

While Las Vegas is the ultimate party playground, Nevada’s wilderness is just as colourful and unique. Take a 45-minute drive from the glittering city to see the Valley of Fire State Park and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Encompassing 40,000 acres of red sandstone outcrops and earthy limestone, this stunning conservation area is an archaeological wonder. Here you can discover fascinating 2,500-year-old petroglyphs carved into the rocks by the Basketmaker-culture, magnificent petrified trees, and evidence of human settlement dating back some 11,000 years.

Take an easy hike to the Rainbow Vista viewpoint for the perfect panorama pic, then follow a short trail to Atlatl Rock, where petroglyphs depict the atlatl – an ancient tool that pre-dates the bow and arrow. Our experts can help you craft your perfect, customised visit to this incredible place; give them a call on 1300 363 055.

This Endangered Species Day we’re thrilled to support some of the world’s most threatened species with our Make Travel Matter experiences.

On our Authentic Gorillas & Chimps journey, for example, you’ll explore The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda – a world-class research and education centre that’s working hard to save mountain gorillas from extinction.

And it’s part of an evolving success story: in 1989 there was only 620 mountain gorillas left in the wild; today there’s at least 1,000 individuals found across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In fact, they’re the only great ape whose numbers are currently increasing.

It may only be a third of the size of New South Wales, but Laos is a land of big surprises. Here, the mighty Mekong River meanders by dense forests, lush valleys, lively villages, and soaring mountains too steep for human settlement (in fact only 25% of Laos is inhabited).

And whether you’re enjoying our Authentic Laos itinerary or forging your own path on a journey we’ve customised for you, you’ll Make Travel Matter with experiences that give back to the community. In Luang Prabang, The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre hosts special exhibitions, events, and craft workshops that preserve the rich ethnic cultures of Laos, with a museum and fair-trade handicraft shops that directly support local artisans.

Further afield in Vientiane, the COPE Visitor Centre reveals the lasting impact of landmines, with your visit directly supporting their mission to improve the lives of locals with mobility-related disabilities.

Our Make Travel Matter Experiences reveal Alaska’s wildest heart – and invite you to connect with it in a meaningful way that leaves a lasting, positive impact.

As part of our 15-day Authentic Alaska journey between Juneau and Fairbanks you’ll not only cruise on a small ship (where you might see harbour seals like the beauties pictured!) and ride the legendary Alaska railroad, you’ll also visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre.

This acclaimed conservation hub supports threatened species and is at the forefront of conserving wildlife habitats, plus it’s home to a host of native animals that have been orphaned or injured, and cannot be returned to the wild. Instead, they cared for in huge open-air enclosures, enabling guests to see everything from lynx to muskox and brown bears while also supporting the centre’s important mission.

You know that our Make Travel Matter Experiences are available on our journeys and that they’re chosen based on how they give back, but have you ever wondered what goes into them?

We use an expert-endorsed assessment tool, developed exclusively for us and The Travel Corporation’s family of brands, to measure each experience against a robust set of criteria directly tied to the United Nations’ Global Goals. Our Make Travel Matter Experiences only make the cut if they encourage the greatest community benefit from travel and tourism, and can engage travellers in purposeful adventures that leave a lasting, positive impact.

These Make Travel Matter experiences may support wildlife conservation, sustainable food projects, grassroots women’s collectives, environmental initiatives, disadvantaged youth, or advance community arts and cultural practices – and sometimes, a combination of these.

Malaysian Borneo’s dense rainforests are home to at least 15,000 different plant species, with half of those found nowhere else on Earth. The Rafflesia Keithii, for example, can grow to a metre wide, making it the largest flower in the world. Opportunities to search for this wild beauty abound in the rainforests around Sabah, but don’t let its elegance fool you: it smells like rotting meat to lure its pollinators!

For example, in between exploring Peru’s mysterious Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and colourful Cusco, visiting the Center for Traditional Textiles in Chinchero offers an intriguing glimpse into ages-old Incan culture, handwoven into vibrant fabrics. Ever seen a tiger in the wild?

Along with the iconic Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and the Pink City of Jaipur, North India is a stronghold for the endangered royal Bengal tiger. Experts say only 4,500 tigers remain in the wild, with more than half of them found in India – including in Ranthambore National Park, a highlight of our Wildlife of North India journey. And while no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed, the reserve is home to approximately 70 individual tigers, so your chances of finding one are good. Plus, you’ll visit Wildlife SOS, a NGO devoted to rescuing elephants and bears, so your holiday directly supports local conservation.
