Yeserday was World Turtle Day! 🐢

As you may know, our team at Banora International Group are very passionate about saving the turtles.
We have been donating to Turtle Rehabilitation Centre On Fitzroy Island for many years and we love getting involved with turtle rescue 🥰

Great Barrier Reef is well known as a habitat for turtles. Six of the world’s seven turtle species can be found on the magnificent GBR!
As our head office is located on the GBR, we feel responsible for taking action to save and protect them.

Our programs Study Buddy Bot have taught many students ways of how they can look after the reef and help save our turtles and of course we are massive fans of Molly Steer (Straw No More) 🤩👍

We received an email from our former Claire!

“It’s been a while since I have seen you and I just wanted to inform you that I have received a job.
I want to thank you Janine, for the opportunity you gave me and for being a referee of mine.
My experiences at Banora were wonderful and I wish you, the others and your company the absolute best and thank you for being a blessing in my life.”

Thank you for the wonderful message!
Claire helped us out in many of our virtual programs, administration in the office, strategic research and we are happy to hear she gained worthwhile experiences with us.

Look at how beautiful and remarkable sea turtles are! 🐢💕

Do you know why sea turtles are important in this world? 🤔
There is more to admire than their beauty and cuteness factor!

🐢 Sea turtles play a significant role in balancing our marine ecosystem
🐢 Their eggs help to provide nutrients to the sand and keep the beach healthy
🐢 They help keep the coral reef ecosystem healthy and productive

So, let’s all make smarter choices to save sea turtles!!

Creating life-changing experiences is what we do!! 😆

This is not only for study tours, but also with our volunteer and internship programs!

Observing students having a profound experience volunteering at local organisations is extremely rewarding to our team.
We partner with local charities to help our international students gain these skills, providing them with a unique experience, only found in Australia such as caring for Australian native animals!
Students gain the added benefit of learning about Australian culture, on the job. 😊

A lot of people may think that is just doing work.
But our volunteer programs include some fun activities as well! 😁

For our animal volunteer at Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Fitzroy Island Resort, Queensland, students get to go in the water and do snorkelling or experience the glass bottom boat! During this time, they take down details of the marine life they see and collate it later in the “Eye on the reef” data. This helps contribute to the long-term protection of the Great Barrier Reef 🐠

Students are helping the but in such an incredible location, with fun activities included, students remember the experience with exuberance. 😊💕

We held a lecture to Japanese students the other day and we asked this question to them:

“Imagine a plastic bag floating on the ocean, what do you think it looks like?”

Can you answer this question? 🤔

Does it look like seaw**d? Or does it look something like a living animal in the water?
The answer is jellyfish! Sea turtles think they are jellyfish and try to eat them 🐢 It is very sad to see turtles eating plastic bags and suffering… 😢
The main thing we can all do is to simply not litter!

Let us know ONE thing you would do to be more sustainable! ☝️

Since the beginning of September, Queensland Government has banned the use of single-use plastics 🚫 We have been seeing many cafes and restaurants implementing reusable takeaway containers and customers bringing their own bottles and cups 😊✨

Here is an encouraging quote from 1 Million Women:

“If we all switched to reusable cups, we would divert 500 BILLION takeaway coffee cups from landfill every year.”

Let’s all try our best to carry around reusable cups and bottles!!

Tree planting is one of our important activities.

There is a quote:
“Imagine if trees gave off Wi-Fi signals, we would be planting so many trees and we'd probably save the planet too. Too bad they only produce the oxygen we breathe.”

Do you agree with this quote? 🤔 Let me know in the comments!

One big part about participating in animal volunteering is feeding them! 🤩
Students can experience preparing food by cutting fruits and vegetables and at the same time they can learn about animals’ diets 👍
While they are chopping the food, they now know which wildlife animals eat which food and they can also feed them as well!

This is why animal volunteering is one of the most popular volunteer activities 😊

Do you know what the students are holding? 🤔

A lot of our Japanese international students don’t know about this fruit.
This is called a Cherimoya, but because if its creamy texture it’s well-known for its second name, Custard Apple. They are a sub-tropical fruit that is native to South America.
Custard apples are grown in regions from Atherton Tablelands in Tropical North Queensland, all the way down to Lismore, New South Wales.
They are very creamy and sweet, and are commonly eaten fresh and chilled. 😋

Please let us know how you like to eat custard apples 👍

The other day, one of our staff joined the tree planting volunteer with Treeforce Cairns 🌱

The location was at Goomboora Park along the Freshwater Creek and the mission of the day was to complete planting 220 trees! It took a little less than 2 hours to finish planting 220 trees! What an accomplishment! 😆

Our team loves to do volunteering and we encourage people to do it as well! Engaging with the community and being sustainable, benefits our region both socially and environmentally 👍

So fascinating!! 🤩

Did you know that a huge 400-year-old coral was found on the Great Barrier Reef?! 😲
It was found off the coast of Orpheus Island, and researchers have said that it is one of the oldest and the widest coral on the Great Barrier Reef.

The coral is 5.3m tall and 10.4m wide! The coral makes it 2.4m wider than the widest coral found in the Great Barrier Reef previously.
Corals are in fact living species and are growing. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system and we are lucky to be able to live so close to them, and discover this intriguing coral nearby!

Volunteering is not just about wildlife care and tree planting. There are so many ways of volunteering!

One is beach clean up. To maintain the beautiful beaches that we have here in Cairns, it is important to get rid of the rubbish. Unfortunately, there is a lot of rubbish on the beach and marine animals can mistake some rubbish like plastic bags for their food 😢 It can look like a jelly fish and then gets stuck in their intestines! To prevent this from happening, it is important for people to not litter in the first place but if there is rubbish it is important to clean it up!

If you are out at the beach, please do not litter!

Check out ReefClean if you would like to join clean up activities!

Because of the ban of the single-use plastics in Queensland, many of the businesses have been left with their unused single-use plastics.
Before throwing them away, please consider recycling them! 👍

The Great Plastic Rescue is an organisation to save and rescue the single-use plastic that are no longer in use.
They can be transformed and have another life.

“In partnership with Queensland not-for-profits, logistics experts, recycling gurus and award winning advanced manufactures; we’ll give your clean, unused plastic waste a second life.” – The Great Plastic Rescue

Last week, we organised a virtual marine biology program for Japanese students. It was a live sea turtle lecture and behind the scenes tour of the JCU: James Cook University, Australia aquarium with Jennie Gilbert! 🤩

Jennie Gilbert is a well-know marine biologist and rescues and helps injured sea turtles. We have worked closely with Jennie as a co-founder of Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and are a sponsor for the centre 🐢 In the past, our international students and staff have both volunteered at Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. ✨ We all enjoy volunteering there and learning more about sea turtles and what we can do to save them.
She is very knowledgeable, and students love to learn from her! 😍

We love volunteering and will be documenting more of our experiences!

Last week was our intern Michael’s last day 😢
He has written us a testimonial, and here it is:

“My name is Michael Kitto and I have just completed an internship with Banora International Group, the parent company of Study n’ Volunteer Australia. I am very appreciative of all that I have learned in my time with the company, I got to get out of my comfort zone and take a big step towards my future thanks to the experiences that I have gained during my internship. I got an amazing opportunity to work with students from all over Japan, teaching them interesting things about Australia and its wonderful customs and wildlife. I am grateful for the opportunities I was afforded and thankful for the help I was given by the other employees of the business.”

Thank you, Michael, for your hard work! 🤩👏

From today, Queensland Government has banned all single-use plastics! 👍
Single-use plastics such as straws, cutleries, plates, cups and containers are banned in Queensland!

🤔 Do you use single-use plastics?
🤔 Does your city allow businesses to use them?

Did you know that single-use plastics do not naturally break down in the environment…? They take hundreds of years to break down, and they are harmful to the environment 😢

This law applies to all Queensland businesses, but as an individual, we can contribute to a better environment! ✨
Let’s all try to stop using single-use plastics and make the world a nicer place 😊 Yay, Queensland has moved one step close to being more sustainable.

https://qldplasticsban.com.au/

From 1 September, some single-use plastic items are banned in Queensland. Find out what’s banned.

For our second week of Summer Camp 2021 – LIVE!!, we had over 15 people joining “Introduction to SDGs” event 😍

Thank you to those who came along, and we hope everyone learned more about SDGs!

Many of the students who participated were enthusiastic and told us that they would like to make some changes from now on 👍 These included not buying plastic single use water bottles and taking their own bags to the supermarkets! Every person can make a difference.

It is important for people to be aware and be educated about sustainability and it was nice for us to realise that many of the young students around the world are conscious of the environment ✨
