Hollow Log Homes

Hollow Log Homes Nest Boxes for Wildlife. For More information visit: www.hollowloghomes.com.au

Hollow Log Homes, was established as a business in February 1999, When a need for well researched, sturdily built nest boxes for Australian wildlife was identified. Many of the nest boxes around were based on European or North American designs and while there were a few successes more often than not the existing nest boxes were poorly researched and poorly built. Alan and Stacey set about research

ing Australian hollow dependent fauna and their habitat needs working in conjunction with Universities and Government Scientists they have established a comprehensive set of criteria for nest boxes for native wildlife. All of the nest boxes on the ‘Hollow Log Homes’ lists have recorded nesting/denning of the target species. As each new box is developed it is installed and monitored at several test sites around central and south east Queensland, Northern New south Wales and Victoria. Research is an ongoing part of ‘Hollow Log Homes’ business with innovative ideas and new nest boxes being developed constantly.

The 2022 floods brought down one of the old eucalypts along Waterworks Road, opposite Cooinda St, which provided extensive habitat for the local wildlife. It takes a considerable amount of time for the eucalypts that we plant to provide this level of habitat so with funding from Brisbane City Council we engaged Hollow Log Homes to install a series of wildlife boxes to replace the lost habitat. The photo shows one of the new occupants! We haven’t been able to 100% identify the occupant but believe it to be a glider. Exciting news that one has decided to call Pender St home.

If you want to help protect this environment, and these gliders, then the Nicholas Park - Gap Central - Bushcare Group will be at Pender St tomorrow (Wed 20 Sep) from 0730.

See you there!

We had an incredibly exciting day this week! We photographed a Greater Glider in one our Greater Glider Nest Boxes! These boxes have been up less than a year in this location in Northern Queensland! 😱🥳

Here’s what we know about Greater Gliders:

🫶 Australia’s largest gliding mammal
🫶 They can glide up to 100 metres!
🫶 Their big ears and fluffy fur make them look bigger than they are 🥹
🫶 They rotate between up to 20 different hollows at a time
🫶 They are silent and have no distinctive calls
🫶 They feed almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves 🍃

Sadly, Greater Gliders are also 😞. Old growth forests and tree hollows continue to be destroyed by bushfires and land-clearing & their numbers continue to crash.

This gorgeous enjoying a natural hollow. This stunning photo allows us to take a moment to remember why we do what we do 🪺📦

In Australia, about 1/4 of our native wildlife are Hollow users and for their survival, they need hollows in which to nest and breed. 🌳

Many old forest areas, with long-lived trees providing hospitable hollows, have fallen due to land clearing. It’s important we all continue to do what we can to preserve their natural habitat 🏡🌲

If you haven’t seen a Wood Duckling before, I highly recommend a cheeky Google image search - they are adorable! 🦆🐥

Our Wood Duck/Boobook Nest box features a front spout for Wood Ducks, who prefer something more solid to land on 🪵. Nocturnal Boobook owls 🦉🌛prefer this box to others. This is speculated to be because the spout allows for less light to enter during the day 🌞
