Koroit offers a warm welcome and a genuine Irish community. It is considered one of Australia's most complete examples of an early Irish settlement, known for its unique and character-filled atmosphere.
Nestled on the northern rim of Tower Hill State Game Reserve, Koroit is named for the Koroitch Gundidj people who occupied the area for thousands of years. Rich volcanic soils lured men to the land, and by the 1840s and 1850s, Irish immigrant farmers settled here. Many worked as small grain and potato farmers who took their produce down the slope to Warrnambool. The township naturally took on the lively character and culture of the settlers’ Irish homeland as it grew.
Koroit is a finalist in the 'Small Town' category of the 2024 TAC Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards! Vote now to help showcase our charming village!
Our Great Ocean Road region is also represented by Warrnambool in the 'Top Town' category and Timboon in the 'Tiny Town' category.

Did you know Budj Bim, near Macarthur, is the first world heritage property in Australia to be recognised on the UNESCO list solely for its Indigenous heritage?
The Gunditjmara peoples are the traditional owners of Budj Bim, an ancient, volcanic landscape that dates back thousands of years. The town is also home to the Macarthur Wind Farm – the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere. It’s massive! Completed in 2013, it generates enough power for 220,000 homes.
