{Garden visit - Welton House}

Sitting atop an ancient sand dune, Welton House, at 150 years old, is surrounded by rows of vineyards, native plants meticulously clipped to mirror the majestic Richmond ranges in the distance, and sprawling pathways weaving through majestic trees. Wendy Palmer and her brother Ross have created a garden lover’s dream with sustainability guiding at the helm.

“I have been gardening my entire life, it’s in my DNA,” shares garden owner Wendy Palmer. Twenty years ago, Wendy chose Welton House specifically for its mature trees, sparing herself the wait for trees to establish anew.

{Garden Visit - Mayfield}

This exquisite 65ha estate is a patchwork of garden spaces - a horticultural masterpiece! Exciting new projects are underway in this superb cool climate garden. The twin herbaceous border, a grand boardwalk between twin beds of flowery shrubs & perennials was completed last year, and gets better each season as perennials grow. The formal rose garden has been recently renovated with roses and companion perennials planted in a new design to better display the roses.

In spring you can wander through the lilac border, the cherry walk, around the lake, over the bridges and into the water garden. This dreamy landscape, restorative and inspirational makes for a great day.

Matthew Carroll is a horticultural teacher and garden media presenter, having worked in the industry for over 25 years – some of those years with Graham Ross' The Garden Clinic. He has also worked with Greenlife Industry Australia (formerly Nursery & Garden Industry Australia) on their national marketing programs and as a plant buyer in independent garden centres.

Matthew has travelled the world extensively, exploring how gardens and cultures intertwine and relishes sharing this with other travellers.

Expat Marylyn Abbott’s West Green in Hampshire is a special treat for Australian visitors. Marylyn is an exuberant personality and gardener. You might remember her garden Kennerton Green, in Mittagong, NSW Southern Highlands. While West Green pays homage to its 18th-century origins, Marylyn’s sense of fun is given plenty of room to play. Her ‘Alice in Wonderland’ walled garden, ornamental potager, Garden of the Five Bridges, classic water staircase, Persian water garden are set against her romantic Lake Garden. Lunch in the conservatory was a real treat.

Monet’s Giverny is a great creative double act – the garden itself and the paintings it inspired. He was totally involved in the creation of the garden. He designed it and planted it (along with seven gardeners) and wrote daily instructions to his gardening staff. He made precise designs and layouts for plantings, collected plants (and books on botany) – and painted the results over decades.

There are essentially two gardens here, the first is the flower garden around the double-storey pink farmhouse; the second is the water garden on the other side of the road. Here's the view from the house into the flower garden.

When Marie Antoinette was Queen of France she wasn’t fond of the court at Versailles. She preferred the country life and so in 1783 she ordered the construction of her own secluded estate 'The Queen's Hamlet' in the grounds of Versailles, with her own small palace and gardens. The gardens resemble the country of which she was so fond of – farmhouses, vegetable gardens, trees and ponds.

Walking through the gardens at Palais Het Loo is like stepping back in time. The gardens were restored to their 17th century glory for their 300th anniversary in 1984, using original documents.

As you can see from the swirling patterns of the symmetrical beds, called parterre broderie for their embroidery-like effect, the garden is designed to be looked at from the raised terraces and from the palace itself. But it’s also for walking through: to admire the water features; the statuary; the special flowers and plants, each grown in splendid isolation from its fellows in the outer border of the beds. Also drawing you into the garden is this hornbeam tunnel which encloses the Queens’s Garden.
