Fiji is always a fantastic option for families. Only a 4 hour flight from Sydney your tropical oasis awaits. This family had a fantastic time at beautiful Castaway Island, they felt that the staff really made their stay. They couldn’t believe how great the snorkelling was just metres off shore!

WEARING A MASK IS NO LONGER REQUIRED ON FLIGHTS TRAVELLING TO AUSTRALIA AS OF MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT.

The Minister for Health, Mark Butler, announced the requirement would be removed yesterday based on advise from the Chief Medical Officer.

The news follows last week’s national cabinet decision to drop mask requirements on domestic flights which also came into effect today.

The department of health is still encouraging travellers to wear a mask to reduce their personal risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19, however, it is no longer mandatory.

Airline passengers have been required to wear masks on flights to Australia since January 2021.

“I encourage everyone travelling overseas to be mindful of the continuing risk of COVID-19 and to take personal precautions to stop the spread and stay safe,” Butler said, upon making the announcement.

The Minister for Transport Catherine King acknowledged the role of workers across the airline industry in helping to keep Australians safe.

“The Australian Government is grateful to workers across the international airline industry and the travelling public for their commitment to the public health requirements throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“Your efforts have kept us all safer.”

CAN’T TOUCH THIS:
A guide on what not to touch at the airport…

Once ridiculed, wiping down your plane seat is now de rigueur. We know not to touch an unsanitised hotel remote or drink from a hotel’s glasses before having given them a good clean yourself. But there’s another part of the travel journey that needs addressing: the airport.

An airport is the nexus of the world. And the point at which all the germs we carry with us meet.

Since COVID-19 hit, airports, like hotels, cruises and airlines have all updated their cleaning protocols, but there are still places best avoided research, published in the BMC Infectious Diseases Journal, found.

Check in kiosk

You know how grubby your phone screen is? Now multiply that by all the people who checked in before you. You can’t really avoid touching this one, so sanitise those hands both prior and after touching one.

The security carry-on trays

Unless you travelling with zero carry on (an impossibility considering you’re likely to have extra masks, wipes and sanitiser for your flight), you’ll have to touch these ones too. But, half of the trays swabbed carried traces of a respiratory virus.

“We found the highest frequency of respiratory viruses on plastic trays used in security check areas for depositing hand-carried luggage and personal items,” the study’s authors wrote, noting that viruses tend to survive longer on non-porous plastic surfaces.

Passport control windows

We’re so used to the plexiglass that separates us from those serving us. We’re also just human so sometimes we forget and touch the stuff. Best not to, as researchers found them to be working so well at protecting us from each other’s germs that they themselves are covered in them.

Play areas

When your kids have been or will be locked up for hours on a plane, a play ground is a great way to burn off some of that boundless energy they seem to have, but researchers who swabbed airport play equipment found the pieces crawling with traces of respiratory viruses.

Bubbler buttons

A study commissioned by InsuranceQuotes.com, found that buttons on a bubbler were among the filthiest spots in the entire airport, home to an average of 19,181 viable bacteria and fungal cells per square inch, News Corp reported. By comparison, most household toilet seats have an average of 172 of the scary sounding colony forming units (CFU).

Arm rests

You may not want to fight over the arm rests of the gate lounge seats. The InsuranceQuotes.com data revealed an average of 21,630 CFU on chair armrests in boarding areas at gates.

THE OMICRON VARIANT HAS SPREAD RAPIDLY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AND AUSTRALIA AND WITH IT WE’VE SEEN A NEW ARRAY OF TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR AUSSIES.

So what requirements do Aussie travellers face as we kick off 2022?

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL:
Australian citizens and permanent residents aged 12 and over who are fully vaccinated can leave Australia without needing an outwards travel exemption and can be eligible for reduced quarantine requirements when returning to Australia.

Quarantine-free international travel into Australia is possible for fully vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents and temporary visa holders in NSW, Victoria, the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, provided they isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Direct international arrivals to Western Australia and Queensland must undertake hotel quarantine for 14 days.

Travellers to Australia should complete an Australia Travel Declaration (ATD) at least 72 hours prior to departure. The ATD includes a vaccination certificate, a legally binding declaration in relation to their vaccination status, and an acknowledgement that when they check-in for their flight, they must present evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 3 days of their flight’s scheduled departure to Australia.

The ATD also includes a declaration regarding the travellers last 14 days travel history, and a declaration that the person will comply with the quarantine requirements of the state/territory of first arrival and any other state/territory to which they intend to travel and have made quarantine arrangements prior to travel where required.

Interstate travel:

NSW:

For those arriving in NSW from another Australian state or territory, there is currently no requirement to complete an entry declaration form, however, entry will be restricted if an NSW Health concerns notice identifies affected areas, areas of concern and places of concern.

If you are allowed to travel to NSW from a location that appears in the COVID-19 concerns notice, when you arrive you may be required to self-isolate for 10 days and get a COVID test.

There is currently no concerns notice for any other state or territory.

Travellers also need to comply with COVID-19 rules and restrictions within NSW.

Victoria:

There is no permit required to enter Victoria from interstate, unless you have been overseas in the past 14 days, and there are no domestic testing requirements for interstate arrivals.

Victorian residents who tested positive to COVID-19 interstate can return home to complete their isolation.

Queensland:

Travellers entering Queensland from a hotspot must be fully vaccinated, take a COVID-19 PCR test (from a COVID-19 hotspot), receive a negative test result within the 72 hours prior to their arrival in Queensland, and apply for and receive a Queensland Entry Pass.

Those who have not been in a hotspot can enter directly from a safe travel zone without restrictions.

Hot spots include NSW, ACT, Victoria, parts of the Northern Territory around Darwin and the north island of New Zealand.

South Australia:

There are no restrictions on interstate travel in South Australia.

Tasmania:

Fully vaccinated travellers need to register their travel through the Tas-e Travel system and those who have been in high risk areas need to have a negative result from a COVID-19 test before arriving in Tasmania. This can be a rapid antigen test 24 hours before departure or a PCR 72 hours prior to departure.

Unvaccinated travellers will be required to quarantine for up to 14 days after applying to enter Tasmania through the Tas-e travel system. They also need to provide a negative COVID test prior to departure.

Northern Territory:

Fully vaccinated people can travel to the NT without quarantine and proof of vaccination is required on entry. Travellers must complete a border re-entry form before arriving, receive a rapid antigen test after arrival, on day 3 and day 6, and are required to download the G2G Now App.

These travellers can travel anywhere in the NT, except to an excluded community, within 14 days of arrival.

Unvaccinated travellers are not allowed to enter the NT.

Western Australia:

Travellers from everywhere in Australia except for the NT are not permitted to enter without an approval through G2G Pass, and must undergo 14 days quarantine at a government approved hotel.

They also have to provide proof of being double vaccinated and will need to be tested on days 1, 5 and 13 of quarantine.

Travellers from the NT also need an approved G2G Pass and must undergo self-quarantine at a suitable premises for 14 days. These travellers have to undergo testing on days 1 and day 12, as well as provide proof of being fully vaccinated.

ACT:

There are no longer any restrictions on interstate travel to the ACT.

NEW DATA TOOL REVEALS LEAST RISKY COUNTRIES FOR AUSSIE TRAVELLERS NOW THAT BORDERS ARE BACK OPEN

The index provides an interactive map allowing users to scroll over a country and be provided with vaccination rates, approved vaccines and current quarantine measures in place, which will be updated weekly.

According to the data, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand are currently the ‘safest bets’ for Australians looking to both get past the custom gates and experience a level of relative freedom once there without significant exposure to COVID-19.

Reviewing the analysis, Decision Inc. believes Thailand would be a destination to avoid in the immediate term, with a low vaccination rate, high cases numbers and mid-level stringency measures indicating a slow return to normalcy.

Conversely, Fiji may be a destination to watch with a climbing vaccination rate, a low infection rate and top stringency measures which are able to bring COVID to heel quickly.

The US is also worth considering with reasonable vaccination rates and case numbers, though this varies on a state-by-state basis.
