15 Bhutan Tour Highlights Besides Tiger’s Nest

Let me just start this post out by saying that you have to do a Bhutan tour in order to visit the country. You cannot just go there and explore on your own. This is likely part of the country’s aim to protect their culture and holy sites, since it’s one of the few non over-tourism destinations in the world!

Nestled in the remote eastern region of Bhutan, Merak and Sakteng feel as if they’re a world away from the rest of Bhutan. These idyllic villages are inhabited by the semi-nomadic Brokpa yak herders who move their herds to lower altitudes in winter and higher pastures in summer. The people of Merak and Sakteng have a distinctive cultural heritage, including their unique clothes. The women are especially known for their beautiful singing voice and stunning traditional jewellery. A trip to Merak and Sakteng will take you through breath-taking natural scenery, including the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary.

Every year on December 13th, a special festival named Druk Wangyel Tshechu takes place at the Dochula Mountain pass in honour of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and the Royal Bhutan Army. Dochula is located about an hour's drive from Thimphu, enroute to Punakha. At Dochula, you will find 108 identical chortens (stupas); the complex serves as a landmark for travelers passing through Dochula. What makes the Druk Wangyel Tshechu unique is that the mask dances performed at this festival are not commonly seen in other festivals in the country.

Trashigang Dzong is considered to be one of the largest fortresses in the country. Its construction in 1659, on a ridge overlooking Drangme Chhu river, was guided by the prophetic vision of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The Dzong acted as a defense against invasions and according to legend, it was referred to as the ‘Sky Fortress’ due to the sight of the Dzong perched high on the mountain ridge.

Held in the Kingdom's central administrative and religious center, Tashichhodzong, Thimphu Tshechu is one of the biggest and grandest religious and social celebrations in Bhutan. Although the public attends the festival over the course of three days, monks make preparations months in advance. The day and night before the actual festival, prayers and rituals are conducted to invoke the deity. For three days, mask dances are performed, like the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche), Shaw Shachi (Dance of the Stags), and others. It is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kingdom’s culture and mingle with locals who are dressed in their finest gho and kira.
This year, Thimphu Tshechu will happen from 24th-26th September.
