It’s easy to feel infatuated with the idea of Bhutan when you first hear of this mysterious Himalayan kingdom, but once you discover the people, food, its culture and traditions, and feel the pulse of what truly makes the nation, you are in love. Be surprised by the diversity of Bhutan – so much more than meditating monks and smiling faces. From the flamboyant heart of the country’s modestly sized capital to remote highlanders and sultry southern foothills, Bhutan is a land at once meticulously preserved and rebelliously modern.

Museums are full of stories – stories about history, culture, people and places. Visiting museums, especially historical museums, helps us uncover the complexities of our histories, expand our perspective, and deepen our understanding of the past. At the Ogyen Choling palace and museum in Bumthang you will find one of the country’s largest collections of artifacts and exhibits including ancient Bhutanese art, textile, arms and armor, masks, musical instruments, tools, household items and more. Originally built in the 19th century, the palace was reconstructed in 1898 after an earthquake destroyed the previous manor. Today, it is a lovingly preserved museum showcasing the lifestyle of aristocrats in ancient Bhutan. If you go to Bumthang, a visit to the Ogyen Choling palace and museum is a worthwhile trip.

Bhutan is truly timeless; many may see it as an anachronism but the nation’s ancient traditions are fused with modern life in the most natural way that it defies chronological misplacement. On the surface the main avenue of capital Thimphu appears modern, but travelling around it and to other parts of the country offers innumerable opportunities to experience the country’s traditional culture and connect with incredibly hospitable people. Another reason to plan a trip.
