[Update: Last known sighting of Vector was on July 23. To our knowledge no action by DFO was possible. All known recent sightings are in the Campbell River / Texada / Comox area. ]

Entangled Humpback - has been reported to the DFO Incident Reporting Line. Vector the Humpback was last sighted near Sentry Shoal, Campbell River June 28th.

As you will note, Vector's entanglement is difficult to see. The most likely way there will be success in relocating this Humpback is by someone recognizing them by their dorsal fin. To this end, local ecotourism operators and Straitwatch have also been alerted.

You can help by:
- If you see a Humpback, maintain a distance of at least 200 metres. Check if you see a rope near the whale’s head as shown in the photo.

- If you think you have found Vector, ideally this would be supported by photos showing the dorsal fin (to confirm ID) and the entanglement.

- Contact the DFO Incident Reporting Line 1-800-465-4336 with specifics about location. Stay with the whale please if you can till a member of the response network can come and keep track of the whale. The biggest challenge. as is evident by Vector not having been resighted yet, is to find the whales so that they can be disentangled by those with expertise and the necessary equipment.

- We and other members of the Canadian Pacific Humpback Collaboration will be on standby to confirm the ID of the whale.

- Spread awareness of how significant a threat entanglement is for Humpback Whales and know what to do when you see an entangled whale, why it is so important to document who the whale is, and why expertise is need for disentanglement. See our resource www.HowToSaveAWhale.org
