Today is Endangered Species Day and we would like to introduced you to the Five-lined Skink found in Watershed Wonders at Muskoka Discovery Centre The Common Five-lined Skink is the only lizard native to Ontario. It is 8.6 cm (3 in.) in length. They are easily identified by five stripes along their back and some adults and juveniles have blue tails that fades with age. The Common Five-lined Skink feeds on insects, worms, spiders and snails. On cool mornings, the lizard may bask in the sun, but is most often found hiding under cover. Woody debris, leaves and rocks are important year round habitat for this lizard and its prey. The species has two populations in Ontario. The Carolinian population is found on sandy areas in the southern-most part of Ontario and is listed as Endangered, whereas the South Shield population, which includes Muskoka, can be found in rocky areas and is listed as a Species of Special Concern. Both populations are threatened by habitat loss from development and even small activities like raking of leaves or removal of cover objects, illegal collecting, traffic mortality and increased predation by domestic pets. Muskoka Discovery Centre is excited to re-open as soon as possible .
