Yesterday we welcomed newlyweds Sean & Carissa to Beaver Cottage! ✨ We’re hoping the highlands pull out all the stops with some gorgeous September weather, and maybe our resident deer will make an appearance or two. Enjoy these next few days of rest & relaxation, away from that city life! ✌🏻

I don’t know how many times in my life I’ve stood in this spot, staring down the road.
… to start a run, a walk, a bike ride.
… to drive into town or head back home.
The road never changes. Sure, the leaves change & blanket the ground for winter. The spring melt creates puddles in all the usual spots. My dogs run up and down this hill all season long.
They say take the road less travelled - but what about the road travelled by generations? ♥️

Hello, my deer 🦌
Every summer we have a family of deer who spend time on our property (I’d like to think it’s some of the same year after year…)
It’s so wonderful to be immersed in nature and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A quiet moment spent on the road, a mutual respect for each other. ♥️ I love the critters who allow us to cottage in their woods, and we try to keep it as natural as possible 🌱

Calm.

This is what I’ve always felt when I’m near the water. Any water, really.

I’ve felt extreme peace and gratitude sitting on the sand at Juno Beach watching the waves hit the shore. I’ve felt peace sitting by the River that runs through my hometown.

But never in my life have I felt more at peace than when I’m at Soyers. Last night, I stood on the dock, alone, staring at the sky as Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon were aligned. The waters so still, and the sky so clear. A subtle reminder from nature to s l o w d o w n
and rest. 🙏🏻

the story of these pillows is a special one. After my grandfather passed away, I somehow found myself with three pairs of his corduroy pants. Something told me to hold onto them but I had no idea why. Then I had the idea to have my beautiful and talented friend Marsha make them into throw pillows. There are some in Guelph, some in England with our family (and where my grandpa spent every Christmas) and of course, some at Beaver Cottage. I gave them to my mum and cousins for Christmas one year — and it’s still one of the most special gift I’ve ever given. Guests will notice that one throw pillow looked chewed on the corner (you can thank Murphy for that when he was a wee pup) — and my Grandpa would have adored that. 🤍
When I say his soul is felt all around Soyers Lake, I really mean it. I wish more people could have met my grandpa - because he was one of the best!

Generations.✨

That’s the beautiful thing about our land - the generations that came before & will come after.

My great-grandfather had a vision when he purchased the land many, many moons ago — and I think everyone in the family will agree that we are so thankful for that vision.

Now five generations on, and the land is loved and cared for more and more each season.

We spent Sunday & Monday prepping and painting the living room! Saturday was so humid - so we put together something brand spankin’ new for the cottage (any guesses?)😎

Morning Coffee on the dock is one of my favourite times of day. ☕️ sometimes it’s early, sometimes it’s mid-morning, but it is always peaceful 🙏🏻 but either way it’s a major level up from sitting at my desk responding to emails. Well, it wouldn’t be Beaver Cottage without beavers sourcing on our property! 🦫 🪵
We’ve been busy outside doing our annual spring tidy (sounds silly in the woods, doesn’t it?)

I love wandering the woods this time of year and discovering the new growth, seeing the forest come alive again, ready to welcome us into the summer season. It’s a poetic reminder that we can survive through the coldest and darkest times, and there is beauty on the other side.

Last weekend I had a visitor during my morning coffee by the lake — this sweet lil guy! He hung around for a bit before flying off to do birdie things. 🐦

I find nature so soothing. The water lapping against the rocks, the birds singing, the trees swaying.

I may be biased, but Soyers Lake is the perfect place to escape, to regroup and recharge — and I think we could all use a little of that these days. 🤍

Hello 2021 ✨

What a whirlwind of a year 2020 was. We started renting with you again, something we took a break from for many years. We made the decision to rent again before hit, and we’re so glad we did. We were able to provide you with an escape from not just the city, but the crazy pandemic. Escaping in nature has always proven to be very therapeutic 🙏🏻. We have lots planned for 2021, and cannot wait to share our cabin with you again!

One of my favourite times of the year is Fall. I love sitting on the rocks, looking out at the lake - but even more so, the tiny details in nature. The leaves falling, the waves crashing then freezing, the moss settling in for another winter. Beauty is truly all around if you take the time to look.

Stay with us in 2021, and enjoy a peaceful escape from the city life. Take a moment to pause and reflect on that nature has to offer 🌿🍂
