Matte painting department expands with world-class talent

MONTREAL, QC—Rodeo FX is thrilled to announce that the talented team of visual effects artists from Starno.net will be joining the Rodeo FX family. Frédéric St-Arnaud, founder and president of Starno, with more than 25 years of experience, will now head the matte painting department at Rodeo. In merging these mighty creative teams, this department will continue to evolve as one of the best in the world. “We were really on a roll, had the wind in our sails...and then Sébastien [Moreau, CEO of Rodeo FX] arrived with a really interesting proposition,” says Frédéric St-Arnaud. “We’d worked together years ago and had a great rapport so when he approached me and offered a return to Rodeo with the ambition of making a super high-end matte painting department, I was excited.”

At Rodeo’s humble beginnings, Frédéric worked as a matte painter as the company grew from 5 employees to 85. After that period, he left to pursue his own career around the world in some of the most renowned visual effects companies, and eventually came back to Montreal to start his own boutique studio.

“Frédéric is an excellent artist and we have a great relationship so it’s a powerful merging of talent to bring our two teams together at this stage, especially when things are moving ahead so quickly for both of our companies. The potential is endless,” remarks Sébastien Moreau, CEO of Rodeo FX. A versatile studio, Starno has just wrapped up a project with a major Montreal film studio and has several virtual production projects on the go. Starno’s employees and its current projects will be relocated inside Rodeo FX.

Heureux d'être finalistes au Concours IDEA 2021 pour nos vidéos de vieillissement CG, séléctionnés parmi 1200 candidatures !
Les GAGNANTS seront annoncés le 16 juin à 19h30.

Grâce à l’appui de certains logiciels d’intelligence artificielle et d’effets visuels, ainsi qu’un travail minutieux de retouche image par image, STARNO est parvenu à recréer de façon saisissante le vieillissement numérique des comédiens. Dans ce projet, le défi de l’équipe STARNO consistait à avoir des visages proches de la caméra. L’éclairage fort ne donne pas droit à l’erreur et par conséquent, chaque ride ajoutée doit être travaillée pour rester crédible aux yeux des spectateurs.

Le projet a aussi fait partie du ByeBye 2020 de Radio Canada, diffusé en décembre 2020. STARNO est heureux d'avoir collaboré avec Bifurk pour la création de ces vidéos.

We are proud to announce that our Groupe Maurice aging videos are nominated for the IDEA PRICE 2021 ! The nomination was made among 1200 application this year !
The WINNERS will be decided on June 16th, at 7:30pm.

Thanks to the help of several artificial intelligence and visual effects softwares, as well as a meticulous frame by frame digital retouching work, STARNO managed to beautifully recreate the CG aging of four comedians. In this project, close-up shots were a big challenge for STARNO. The strong lighting was not forgiving. Every wrinkle had to be precisely worked on in order to stay believable for the audience.
The project was also part of the Radio Canada ByeBye 2020 diffused in December 2020. STARNO was honored to collaborate with Bifurk to create these videos.

STARNO est fier de montrer son travail sur le film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday (« Les États-Unis contre Billie Holiday »).

Alors que le film vient de sortir le 26 février 2021 sur la plateforme Hulu, STARNO est fier de montrer sa contribution au projet : la création d’images de concept-art qui ont servies pour la pré-production du film.
Afin d’aider le département artistique à conceptualiser les décors du film, STARNO avait pour mandat de créer ces décors entièrement en CG, grâce à des techniques de 3D et matte painting. En effet, à partir de photographies envoyées par la compagnie de production des différents lieux de tournage prévus, ainsi que les directives quant à l’atmosphère voulue pour le film, STARNO a créé de toute pièce ces environnements avec l’aide de plusieurs logiciels de 3D et de retouche photo. Les images de concept-arts finales ont ainsi aidé l’équipe de production à visualiser les décors avant leur construction, ce qui a permis d’assurer une entière satisfaction du style, des couleurs et du ton des décors.

Interprétée avec glamour et intensité dans le film par Andra Day, Billie Holiday était une célébrité dans le monde du jazz et une artiste révolutionnaire du vingtième siècle. Signé par Lee Daniels, le réalisateur de “Precious”, ce drame biographique raconte comment le FBI a terriblement persécuté la chanteuse de renommée mondiale

STARNO is proud to show its work on the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday !

As the film just came out on February 26th, 2021 on the Hulu platform, STARNO is proud to present its contribution to the project : the creation of several concept art images that were used during the preproduction of the film.
In order to help the art department to conceptualize the actual set of the film shooting, Starno’s mandate was to create these sets entirely in CG, thanks to 3D techniques as well as matte painting. The production company sent Starno a few pictures of different shooting locations, then gave instructructions on the mood they wanted for the film. With these, Starno created these environments with the help of 3D and digital photo editing softwares. The final concept art images helped the whole production team to visualize the sets before they were constructed. This ensured everyone was happy with the look, style, colors and tone of the decor.

Played here in the film by Andra Day with glamour and fierceness, Billie Holiday was a famous jazz figure and a revolutionary artist of the 20th century. Signed by Lee Daniels, director of “Precious, the bio-drama chronicles the FBI's intense persecution of the immortal singer.
