Hapa-Zome printing is a natural way to transfer the colors from flowers and leaves onto fabric.

It's a hands-on craft perfect for all ages (with a little supervision, of course).

Here's how to do it:

✅ Supplies Needed:
- Cotton fabric
- Fresh leaves and flowers
- Hammer or mallet
- Wooden board

✅ Steps:
1. Place your fabric on the wooden board.
2. Arrange your freshly picked petals and leaves on one half of the fabric.
3. Fold the other half of the fabric over the top of your plant and petal pattern.
4. Gently hammer the plants into the fabric. Watch the colors transfer through the fabric as you hammer.
5. Keep hammering until the plants are flattened.
6. Carefully unfold the fabric, hang it to dry, and brush off any excess petals or leaves.

And there you have it! A beautiful, nature-inspired design made by you. Happy crafting!

Try making a Nature Suncatcher. It's a beautiful way to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. 🌸🍃

Here's how you can do it:

1. Create a frame
Use colored popsicle sticks and a hot glue gun to make a square frame. You'll need two frames for each suncatcher.

2. Measure and cut.
Take a piece of Press'N Seal (or contact paper) and cut it to fit your frame. Fold it over to create a closed square.

3. Pick up your ornaments from nature
Head outside with your family or little ones and collect flower petals, leaves, and twigs. The more colorful, the better!

4. Design and press
Lay out your nature finds on one side of the Press'N Seal, then fold it over to enclose them.

5. Add twine
Cut a piece of twine long enough to hang your suncatcher and attach it to one of the frames with hot glue.

6. Assemble
Place the nature sheet on one frame and glue the second frame on top to secure everything.

7. Hang it in a sunny window and watch how magical it looks as the sunlight shines through! 🌞

Let’s make a Journey Stick!

This unique memento is a keepsake from your nature walk, which may include leaves, twigs, flowers, feathers, or anything else you find natural along the way. 🌸🍃

Native Americans and Aboriginal people used these to track their journeys and tell stories.

Here’s how you can make your own Journey Stick:

1. Find a stick. Choose a sturdy one to hold your treasures.

2. As you walk, gather items that catch your eye. Remember, only take things that have fallen to the ground.

3. Use string or wool to tie your items to the stick. Younger kids can use a piece of cardboard with double-sided tape.

4. Each item represents a part of your walk. Use your stick to retell your adventure!

Meet Crystalynn Tarr. 👩‍🎨 A natural pigment artist who calls the foothills of the Rockies in Nordegg, Alberta, her home. 🌲🏔️

Creating her art with acrylics, Crystalynn felt a calling to connect more deeply with the land.
In 2015, a high school project on prehistoric cave art made her curious about making paint from local soil.

Since then, Crystalynn has been collecting soil from across western Canada and turning it into beautiful watercolors.

Using traditional methods and natural binders, she processes these pigments by hand, making each creation a true labor of love. 💚

Elk are a large species of deer and you can spot them around David Thompson Country.

The Bull (male) elk are the ultimate show-offs. They sport huge antlers that they shed and regrow every year.

While the Cow (female) elk are more social. They stick together in herds for protection.

Tips for spotting Elks...

1. Early Bird Gets the Elk
These grazers are most active at dawn and dusk. So set your alarm for a wildlife encounter.

2. Listen Closely
Elk are chatty creatures known for their bugling calls especially during mating season in September.

3. Respect the Wild
Remember, they are wild animals. Just keep a safe distance and admire them from afar.

Hold your horses (literally)! If you are lucky you might spot some of the local feral horses just roaming around David Thompson Country. 🐴

Descendants of work horses from the early days of Nordegg. These feral horses, now many generations removed, are an awesome sight to behold.

Your best chance to catch a glimpse is early morning or late evening as these horses are most active at dawn and dusk.
Stay on the lookout for hillsides and meadows. That's where these four-legged runners like to hang out.

But remember, show RESPECT these are wild animals.

Keep a safe distance. Use your zoom camera lens. And soak in the magic of sharing this incredible place with amazing wildlife.

As bears wake up from their winter slumber, please be mindful: We share this beautiful land with these awesome creatures.

So here's how we can all be good neighbors to these precious animals…

Lock away any yummy smells:
- food
- garbage (even bear-proof bins)
- and recycling.

They might be a treat for birds, but bears love them too! Let's keep the buffet closed for them. 😉

Those leftover scents can attract curious noses. Give your grill a good scrub after each use.

Did you know there's more to deer than meets the eye? 🦌

David Thompson Country is home to two deer species... Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer.

Mule Deer are the gym rats of the deer world.

They have huge ears that can swivel almost 180 degrees!

No surprise if they always hear the best gossip in the forest. 🤭

Whitetail Deer might seem a little shy, but don't be fooled.

When they raise their tails, it's a sign they've spotted something interesting and are raising the alarm

Look for the flash of white fur. That's their namesake "white tail"

Spot a bear on your getaway? Don't panic! 🐻

We share our stunning mountain home with incredible wildlife, including black bears and the occasional grizzly.

Black bears are amazing climbers (thanks to those long claws!) and they love a good berry snack. 🫐

Grizzlies, however, are the bigger cousins. They can be identified by their hump.

No selfies with cubs, though. Mama bears are super protective and getting too close is a big no-no.

1️⃣ Lucinda Watkins

Lucinda is a certified hiking guide since 2018 and outdoor enthusiast. She's from Central Alberta where she lives with her husband, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 1 bunny and 1 geriatric chicken.

She spends her free time with her family and runs a non-profit organization that recycles clothing. In her off-season, she teaches group fitness and yoga.

Lucinda is passionate about creating safe, fun, and social hiking experiences for all levels. There's always time to catch our breath and take a photo.

Some of Lucinda’s experiences are..
- Certified through OCC (Outdoor Council of Canada) as a Field leader in Hiking, overnight trips, winter hiking, and snowshoeing
- Instructor for OCC – teaching outdoor leadership skills
- 40-hour Wilderness first aid certification

Founder of Tanya K Leadership Consulting and co-owner of Nature's Getaway Mountain Resort, Tanya brings a wealth of experience in leadership development and community building.

She was the Executive Director of Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK), from 2011- 2021 that's inspiring a city of people to take meaningful action, by feeding and caring for kids who would otherwise go hungry.

She proudly led this organization through countless opportunities, struggles, and organizational pivots for ten years with a vision that communities ensure no kids go hungry.

As an influential non-profit community leader, across Alberta and Canada, she knows what it takes to practice both the tactical and the soft side of leadership.

Tanya is excited to create a space for women to connect, empower each other, and recharge in nature.
