That’s it for the regular season!

Thank you everyone who supported my small business - thank you to those who joined me on a tour, shared my content, recommended me to friends and family, and gave me advice along the way. Starting a tour company was a fantastic experience and I am so grateful for all the people I met during this process.

I am still available for private tours so please reach out! As for next year, I am not sure what the future holds but let me know what you think!

Thank you again for supporting me in my first season and happy fall everyone 🍂🤗

Today is Orangemen’s Day! On July 12, 1690 at the River Boyne in Ireland King William of Orange, the Protestant King of England defeated former King James, a Catholic. The Orange Order was established as a Protestant society in Ireland and settlers to Newfoundland carried the order over. Orangemen’s Day celebrates this victory.

In Newfoundland, the holiday is on the Monday closest to July 12. This mid-July holiday coincides with the middle of the cod fishing season. Historically, many fishers preferred to recognize the day around Christmas. Today the day is a recognized provincial holiday but most stores, restaurants and tourism businesses will be open.

I have never seen an Orangemen’s Day parade so this photo is of an orange haired woman (me).

Today is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. Since 1917, July 1 has been a day of remembrance for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. On July 1, 1916, 801 members of the Newfoundland Regiment valiantly fought in the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont Hamel, France but only 68 were available for roll call the next morning.

Now that Newfoundland and Labrador is a province of Canada, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians also celebrate Canada Day on July 1. For many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, the morning of July 1 is spent in sombre remembrance of our fallen soldiers and the afternoon is a celebration of Canada Day.

Happy June Holiday! June 24 used to be a holiday here in Newfoundland to commemorate the landing of John Cabot in Bonavista on June 24, 1497. A few years ago, this holiday was renamed June Holiday to recognize that John Cabot was not the first individual to discover Newfoundland and Labrador. The Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Inuit, Innu, and the Southern Inuit of NunatuKavut were here in Newfoundland and Labrador for centuries before John Cabot's arrival.

Almost all restaurants and stores will be open as most workers don't get the day off. Only government services (such as the library and the court system) and a few select business will be closed today.

Imagine steering your ship into the foggy abyss ☁️🛥️

These grey foggy days make me grateful for the sunshine when it finally arrives. I can’t imagine being a fisherman or a pilot having to navigate when you can hardly see.

The SS Kyle used to
dominate the coastal route from Newfoundland down
the Labrador coast. Now she rests in Harbour Grace
and provides a home for fish on the mussel ground.

A unique piece of Newfoundland history and a site to
see on your travels.
