Learning Series: smukʷaʔxn (Arrowleaf balsamroot flowers)
We're talking about smukʷaʔxn today with Coralee Miller, who is a member of Westbank First Nation and works at the Sncəwips Heritage Museum. Smukʷaʔxn, also known as the Arrowleaf balsamroot, is a beautiful spring wildflower that has a deep cultural significance.
These bright yellow blooms are not only a sign of spring, but also a traditional food source and a time marker for the Okanagan/syilx People. Please stop by the Sncəwips Heritage Museum & Gift Store to learn more about traditional food sources.
** Please note, one should seek permission from your local nation when harvesting & respect Indigenous protocols. It is not recommended to harvest without proper guidance as it can be detrimental to the plant. Plants should not be consumed unless you are well-versed in their uses as improper usage can be harmful.**

Kalamoir Regional Park is bursting with sunshine! Arrowleaf balsamroot flowers (smukʷaʔxn) are painting the hillsides yellow this spring. Don't miss this display of colour as it only comes around once a year!
