🤔🤔🤔Planning your vacation to the Dominican Republic can lead to many questions because international travel can be complicated. Vacao prides itself on being totally transparent with all guests, so we’d like to share the answers to some frequently asked questions with you.🤔🤔🤔

1. What’s the best way to travel to the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic is an island nation, so your best best to get here is via flight. We recommend booking your flight at least six weeks before you want to fly.

2. What kinds of documents do I need to get into the Dominican Republic?
You’ll need your passport to get through border control and customs. Plus, you’ll have to fill out what’s called an “e-ticket.” You can fill out the e-ticket form before you even leave your home country! We can walk you through the whole process.
3. How long can I stay in the Dominican Republic as a tourist?
Without a visa, you can stay in DR for 30 days. You can extend your stay to 120 days by paying for an extension.

4. What is the Dominican departure tax?
The Dominican departure tax is a government fee that all tourists pay. It’s $20, and will be included in your airfare, so be on the lookout for that extra charge.

5. What’s the drinking age in DR?
The drinking age here in DR is 18 years old. Enjoy the different drinks and cocktails we have to offer, but we encourage drinking responsibly.

6. What kind of weather can I expect on my trip to DR?
Weather in DR varies, but it’s pretty warm here all year round. We get both rain and sunshine, so be prepared for both! The wet season is from May to November, and the dry season is from December to April, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t see rain during the dry season and vice versa.

So what’s the best way to get to and from the airport?

Public transportation probably isn’t the best idea if you aren’t familiar with the area. But you have other options!

🚙You can arrange for one of our drivers to handle the transfer. They’ll get you from the hotel and help with your luggage! We can also arrange for transfers back to the airport at the end of your trip!🚙

1. 🍲🍲🍲Sancocho Dominicano (Meat and Vegetable Stew): Although a few Latin American countries are known for this dish, they all have their own versions! DR’s sancocho is usually reserved for holidays or special occasions, but what’s a more special occasion than a vacation? It’s made with pork, chicken, and/or beef depending on the recipe used, and usually also incorporates veggies like plantains, corn, yuca, and more!

2. 🌅🍳🍞Mangú (Mashed Plantains): Very representative of Dominican food culture, this dish is perfect for vegetarians and meat-eaters! Usually served at breakfast time, mangú is usually made with green plantains, salt, and butter. Hey, beaches!😎

It is fair to say that the Dominican Republic’s main attraction is its wonderful beaches, and not one of them looks like another. To show you their diversity, we’ve picked Dominican beaches outside of Punta Cana that are worth a day trip at least.

🏖 Saona Island
The Caribbean dream came true! Pristine and calm waters, white powdery sand, neverending Piña Coladas and bachata melodies, and on top of that - the Blue Lagoon with its famous habitants: starfish. It’s the most visited place in the whole DR for obvious reasons. Go there in a big international group, book a private trip on a yacht, or even take a helicopter ride over.

🏖 Playa Cayo Levantado
Also known as Bacardi Island, this is a small yet divine beach on Samana Peninsula that attracts travelers with its wide coastline, turquoise water, and palm-studded background. The starfish is hiding much deeper on the ocean bottom so don’t forget your snorkel gear.

🏖 Playa Rincón
This beach was once ranked as one of the 10 best beaches in the world by the Condé Nast Traveler, which speaks for itself. The 'playa' is fully packed with dream beach features: azure waters, soft sand, and coconut trees. It feels fantastic to enjoy freshly caught fish at a restaurant in the shade here.

🏖 Bahía de las Águilas
Translated as “Eagle Bay'', this tranquil beach with diamond-white sand is situated close to the Haiti border, in the Pedernales province. It boasts crystal clear waters, a rocky landscape, and absolutely no hotels, shops, or restaurants, making it a wonderful retreat for lovers of peace. There is a high chance that you may be the only visitor, as you can only get there via SUV or boat.

❤ Dominicans and their spirit 🇩🇴 are what makes people fall in love with the Dominican Republic twice as fast!
Here are some things that you might not know about them:

1. They are loud.
Even their gestures are 😃 If you visit a true Dominican disco, you'll get to hear the loudest music of your life. You won't be able to recognise a song: it's all just bass and vibration. And they still manage to have a chat with each other at the top of their lungs! 🤯

2. Dominicans value family.
Families here are typically big. Very big. An extended family for Dominicans includes not only different family generations, but also neighbors, ex-partners of all sorts, and even that driver that took your granny to the clinic in 2007.
*Consider this a joke to illustrate Dominican friendliness. Or is it? 🤔

3. They are likely to congratulate you on weight gain.
Let's call it Dominican openness and shamelessness. 🤣
Firstly, yes, it is going to happen with all the 'fritos' (fried food) you just have to try on vacation. Secondly, yes, they are going to verbally notice that. No offense intended, take it as: "Wow, now there is more of you to hug!" 😊

4. They make a lot of facial expressions.
These two may catch you off guard!
* No, this one doesn’t mean you smell badly. If you see a Dominican wrinkle up and twitch their nose at you (like a bunny), it simply means they didn’t hear or understand what you just said. 😳
* No, they are not blowing you kisses. If you see a Dominican press their lips as for a kiss and move their head they are actually pointing in some direction. 👉 We have no idea why pointing with lips became a thing over pointing with a finger, but keep this in mind. Also, sometimes it is a blowing kiss. 🤭

🌊 Cabeza del Toro
White, calm beach with bay-like water. Parts of the beach might contain seaweed. The location is perfect for fishing lovers - it has a departure point for yachts and charters.
