The deck of our dahabiya sits close to the water of the Nile, giving you views of the river as we sail and also of life along the banks.

Birds we may see include the great heron (or egret), little egret, Nile hen, and kingfisher.

Fish to watch for, and that might be caught when we have the opportunity to join fishermen at work at Bisaw Island, could include tilapia, Nile perch and catfish.

Crops and fruit trees frequently seen as you drift along the river or walk through farms include sugarcane, wheat, alfalfa, bananas, mangos, and date palms. Animals we see from the dahabiya are mostly domesticated, these include water buffalo, cows, donkeys, and sheep. Foxes and wolves may be seen in more remote areas at night.

Our guides have knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Nile and are happy to share this with you.
If you are specifically interested in bird watching, please advise us when you book your tour so that we can have the most knowledgeable guide and also binoculars available for you.

"I strongly long to go to Egypt… the contemplation of Egypt must fill the mind… with great food for the rumination of long years." Edward Lear, letter to Chichester Fortescue, 1848.

Edward Lear is famous as the author of "The Owl and the Pussycat" and was known for his nonsense poetry, but less known is his work as a painter.

Lear visited Egypt several times and documented his Nile trips on dahabiya in a series of watercolours and sketches, some of these were published as a book by the National Maritime Museum of England.
His second visit to Egypt was at the end of 1853 with his first trip down the Nile in early 1854. He travelled as far south as Philae (near Aswan). In December 1866 he returned to Egypt and took a second trip along the Nile in January 1867, reaching Wadi Halfa.

Here are some of Edward Lear's works, many featured dahabiya - which were the forerunners of the boats our guests stay on during our Dahabiya Nile Sailing tours - and other Nile boats such as felucca.

Our tours include many essential historic sites and opportunities to meet local people, so you experience both ancient and modern Egypt, but one of the greatest enjoyments of your trip will be what happens between the stops along the Nile.

Relaxing and watching life on the river and along the banks gives you a sense of timelessness which is at the heart of experiencing Egypt.

Happy International Women's Day.

We highly recommend this book for anyone who is thinking of visiting Egypt or who has visited. It provides fascinating and sometimes amusing insights about how women travellers in the past experienced Egypt, including trips along the Nile.

'Women Travelers on the Nile: An Anthology of Travel Writing through the Centuries,' edited by Deborah Manley (The American University in Cairo Press (AUC Press), 2016)

This AUC Press anthology explores some of the extraordinary women that ventured to Egypt and traveled along the banks of the Nile

Women travelers in Egypt in the nineteenth century saw aspects of the country unseen by their male counterparts, as they spent time both in the harems of Cairo and with the women they met along the Nile. Some of them, like Sarah Belzoni and Sophia Poole, spoke Arabic. Others wrote engagingly of their experiences as observers of an exotic culture, with special access to some places no man could ever go.

From Eliza Fay’s description of arriving in Egypt in 1779 to Rosemary Mahoney’s daring trip down the Nile in a rowboat in 2006, this lively collection of writing by women travelers includes Lady Evelyn Cobbold, Isabella Bird, Norma Lorimer, Harriet Martineau, Florence Nightingale, Amelia Edwards, and Lucie Duff Gordon.

The beauty of life along the Nile River can't simply be imagined, it needs to be experienced on our wooden sailing boat called a dahabiya.

A Dahabiya Nile Sailing Cruise takes you to the heart of Egypt, down this great river whose banks are home to so much history.

The most relaxing, luxurious way to experience the temples and other historic sites and local culture, the Dahabiya takes you to places that standard Nile cruises cannot. You will visit villages and get close to community life, which many of our guests say is what makes our tours outstanding.

Many people thinking of visiting Egypt are only familiar with the pyramids and the most famous temples and tombs. However there are hundreds of less known ancient sites throughout Egypt that feature wonderful artworks.

Sailing in our dahabiya makes some of these accessible to you more easily than by land travel, and the big Nile cruise boats cannot dock at these places.

El Kab is one of the stops that will delight you with its art.

Email [email protected] to ask about what other sites can be included in your tour.

Most of our guests are awake at sunset 🙂 but we highly recommend also catching at least one sunrise during your Dahabiya Nile Sailing tour. You will get geat views from the deck, but also excellent views from your room if you don't want to venture out of bed too early before breakfast 🌞

Email [email protected] to ask us about what can watch sunrise over the Nile in comfort.

We suggest including at least one day in Aswan in your visit to Egypt, but you could easily spend three days or more exploring here, especially if you include the temples of Philae (in photos) and Abu Simbel.

Aswan and the surrounding area has some of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Egypt, especially on Elephantine Island where you can see a broad range of Egypt's history. It is also a centre of Nubian culture which we will introduce you to.

Aswan is part of or can be added to our variety of Dahabiya Nile Sailing tours.
