A seminal work of literature and anthropology, Professor Asmerom Legesseโ€™s book โ€œGada: Three Approaches to the Study of African Societyโ€ remains the most authoritative text in the study of the complex and incredible Gadaa System. Professor Asmerom manages to capture the mechanics and spirit of the Gadaa system based on his extensive experience of the Borana Oromo - one of the strictest adherents of the system to date - and marries that to the larger story of the Oromo starting with creation and cosmology. For his dedication to the truth and this most important of Oromo stories, Professor Asmerom will always be a hero - goota - of the Oromo people.

The beautiful Ilkee Falls on the Gebba river form a scenery worth fairytales and fantasy lands, cascading downhill across the blanket of greenery that is the Ilubabor highland rainforest. Ilu clearly is natureโ€™s favorite.

Bokoji is a small town in Arsi Zone that boasts one of the highest concentrations of Olympians in the world. From the great Derartu Tullu to the Dibaba sisters that dominated athletics for much of the past two decades, Bokoji rules long distance running.

This dominance has been so assured that many have wondered what it is about Bokoji that makes it such a prolific source of champions. The town is found at an altitude close to 3000 meters above sea level, and lies in the middle of a largely barley producing plateau. While the altitude and barley-based diet can be partially credited for the behemoth the town has become in world athletics, it's due time Bokoji's sprinkle of athletics magic was conceded.

Have you ever been to Bokoji? Do you know some of Bokojiโ€™s Olympians?

Wonchi Crater Lake

Wonchi is the picturesque lake situated about 32kilometres south west of Ambo on the road to Waliso nearly half way between the two towns.

In the hot spring valley, one can observe natural offers like hot and cold mineral springs (being used by local people for cure of illness): the waterfall gushing out just from the foot of the hill and many other eye-catching scene.

Good Moring Oromia, Ethiopia!

Lake Wonchi (Haroo Wenchi)

Wonchi lake is a picturesque crater lake which is located on the mountain range between the town of Ambo and Woliso. The lake is the beautiful legacy of a once powerful volcano erupting in the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic Era. The volcano erupted about 1000 years ago and left asymmetric caldera of rock which is now covered in lush green vegetation. The whole crater contains a large lake with small islands, hot mineral springs, waterfalls and beautiful valleys and farmland.

Due to its unique topography, the Lake is also a habitat for varieties of animal and plant species, some aquatic birds and it is a splendid area for a number of indigenous forest reserves, including Egynia Abyssinica (Kosso- plant used in traditional medicine as a vermifuge) and Erica Arborea (Hasta).

An old monastery with a church known as Wonchi Cherkos is positioned on one of the lake islands making the spot more enticing and mesmerizing. The monastery is believed to have been constructed in 13 Century by St. Tekle Haymanot and reconstructed by Emperor Zara Yaqob in 15th Century .It hosts a large church bell, called the โ€œGondar bellโ€, because it is said to have belonged to Emperor Fasilidas who reigned in Gondar.

It is possible to spend a whole day in Wonchi crater exploring the traditional Oromo villages, lake, monastery island and forests by a combination of horseback, boat and walking. Itโ€™s also possible to visit lake Dendi ; a bell shaped lake 20 Km away from Wenchi or Visit the peaceful Guder Falls before returning to Addis Ababa.

The Office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with its newest development project, ('Dine for Ethiopia') has given due attention to develop the destination and increase Tourist flow to the area.

The Gada System is a well developed and complex operation system representing unique civilization of humanity since antiquity. The Gada System is well known by its feature of peaceful and democratic transfer of political power (Balli) in every eight (8) years. Having exercised democratic political power for 8 consecutive years, the power holder transfers his power officially and publicly. The Public power transfer ceremony takes place at a Gada center where all the voters and concerned sections of the society participate. These centers are at Gumi Gayo for Borana and Gabra, Miโ€™e Boko & Nura for Guji, Oda Nabe for Tulama, Oda Bisil & Oda Bulluk for Macha, Hora Sama for Karrayu, Oda Roba for Arsi, and Oda Bultum for Itu & Humbana. It is a ritual by which Baalli or the symbol of political power is transferred to newly elected Abba Gada (the presiding leader). Such power transferring ceremonies occur every eight years at ritual places or elsewhere with unique cultural performances and are exceptional tourist attractions.

What to eat in Oromia?
we Gada Events and Gada Ethiopian Tours provide a beekeeping tours to Oromia Regional state where organic honey is found!
Join us and let we explore and experiencing the untouched cultural food of Oromo!
Bore Honey
The district of Bore is located in the Ethiopian Guji highlands, home to the eponymous indigenous community. Apart from honey, which is used as a food, a medicine, and an ingredient used to prepare beverages such as mead (locally known as boka), the indigenous people also farm cattle and grow grains and legumes.

The honey is produced by bees during the rainy season which lasts around 7 months each year, resulting in lots of flowers. The bees make two types of honey in their traditional hives called gagura โ€“ white honey and dark, amber-colored honey.

Gagura hives are long cylinders hanging from tree branches, made with a combination of straw, bamboo, banana leaves, and vines. The honey is collected only once a year, in the middle of the night between April and May. People climb the trees and smoke out the hives, then collect both types of honey with sticks.

The white honey comes from gatame (Schefflera abyssinica) flowers, and most of it is sold locally in Bore. It has a buttery, creamy, and melting texture, while the flavor is sweet and vegetal with a spicy finish. The dark honey, on the other hand, is sometimes crystallized and comes from several different flowers such as African Prune, Vernonia amydalina, and Hagenia abyssinica.

In the region, bore honey is traditionally offered to guests and friends at festive events, and it is often served with traditional foods such as toasted barley grains, curdled milk with barley flour, and barley flour with butter. In recent years, the number of honey producers has fallen, and around 50 beekeepers are no longer active.

There is also the problem of habitat loss and deforestation which negatively affects the production area.
