Timkat, which translates as ‘baptism’, celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. Ethiopians celebrate this annually with a mass baptism at different waterfronts or sacred pools around the country. Because of its universal value, UNESCO granted timket a status of intangible cultural Heritage in 2019. Today the baptism ceremony was attended by Tourism Minster Ambassador Nassise Chali, Amhara region officials and tourists.
