“Meeting a hyena is a spiritual ceremony, and people believe in spiritual things. In the darkness, you only see two shiny eyes, same like cats,” says Mikiyas Belachwe, an Ethiopian man who routinely performs a face-to-face feeding practice with wild hyenas in the city of Harar. The bizarre association between spotted hyenas and Harar dates back centuries, with its mysterious beginnings obscured by myth and tradition. According to local legend, there was a long, brutal conflict between people and hyenas during a severe famine. Elders began feeding the hungry hyenas a thick, buttery porridge in an effort to dissuade them from raiding the city. Over the years, hyena feeding has merged with regional Islamic traditions and become quite a sight to see. Book a trip to Harar with Zulla Discovery to witness this experience up close!

World Agriculture Day

Today we celebrate World Agriculture Day and the different ethnic groups of Ethiopia that specialize in agriculture! The Dassenech people are predominantly agro-pastoralists who complement their income from livestock production with the cultivation of crops such as sorghum, maize, pumpkins and beans on the flooded banks of the Omo River. When they are unable to rely on cattle, they turn to Lake Turkana for their livelihood, where they fish and hunt crocodiles and even occasionally hippopotami. The Aari are blessed with vast and fertile lands in the north of Mago National Park, which lends itself to an agricultural lifestyle. They grow several crops consisting of grains, wheat, coffee, mangoes, bananas, and various root vegetables, in addition to managing large herds of livestock.

Visit the mysterious Menelik Palace in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Constructed in the 1890’s, the structure was named the Egg House on account of the octagonal dome shape of its roof. It featured Menelik II’s personal bedroom, his wife, Empress Taytu Betul’s private quarters, princes’ bedrooms, a reception room, a small banquet room, and Ethiopia’s first telephone room, all connected through passage ways. The palace features a uniquely Ethiopian blend of both European and Indian, as well as local influences.

Adwa Victory Day is a symbol of African resistance against colonial powers. It all started when Ethiopia, a country made up of semi-independent kingdoms, was under the rule of the Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II in the 19th century. Although most of Africa had already been placed under colonial rule, Ethiopia was able to remain a sovereign nation with a strong monarch and a competent army.
