A member of the Surma tribe, Ataye previously held this record at 15 cm, but she exceeded it by 4.5 cm. She was photographed by Australian film-maker Abraham Joffe - this photo features in the book.

Normally worn for decoration, for the Surma people of southern Ethiopia the significance of wearing lip plates is a financial one. The process of inserting these plates (made by the women themselves from local clay, which are then coloured with ochre and charcoal and fire-baked) begins approximately a year before marriage and the final size indicates the number of cattle required by the girl's family from her future husband for her hand. For example, a plate measuring 15 cm (6 in) in diameter - the previous record holder - would require a payment of 50 cattle.

girls are circumcised young, at around age 10 or 12. If they aren’t circumcised she cannot marry & her father won’t receive her bride-price. Until they are circumcised, girls are called ‘wild animals’ or ‘men’ to tease them – the idea is that their cl****is has to be removed before they act like women. Once they go through the ritual of circumcision they are given sour milk to drink & a necklace by her mother. From then on, she is allowed to wear a leather skirt to show that she is now considered an adult. marriage follows soon after.

The former Olympic and World Champion Athlete Haile Gebrselassie has concluded a deal with Almacena Platform to provide fine coffee from Sheka Zone, Southern Ethiopia.

Almacena Platform said that “the Olympic gold medal champion has teamed up with Almacena Platform offering a fine selection of coffee.”

According to the Almacena Platform, “Haile Speciality Coffee will be offering a fine selection of coffee from his 1500 ha. farm, located in the Sheka Zone.”

Haile Coffee was founded in 2013 and produced organic honey from the forests of Sheka along with coffee. Its annual production capacity is 200 metric tons.

His washed Masha Grade 1 coffee will be released to the market on June 07, 2021, with a price tag of € 8.33 per kilogram. The price is equivalent to 414.73 Birr in today’s exchange rate.
