As the world prepares for the Tokyo Olympic Games we recognize the remarkable achievements of Ethiopia's Derartu Tulu. Born in a small farming village in Arsi Province, Derartu made history in 1992 when she became the first black African woman to win Olympic Gold by edging out South Africa's Elana Meyer in the 10,000 meters. These days it is common to see African women on the podium but this was not always the case and Derartu helped pave the way for many future African world and Olympic champions. Almost 30 years after her first gold medal Derartu is still widely admired throughout the sporting world and especially in Ethiopia. "Deru" is respected not only for her humanitarian efforts but also for her business acumen. In 2018 she was named interim president of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation and in February, 2021 she was officially elected to a four year term. #Ethiopia #EthiopianRunners #DerartuTulu #EthiopianAthleticsFederation #RunEthiopia #EthiopianAthletics
