Ethiopian Easter in Lalibela-an event not to be missed!
We wanted to let you know that this year we will be organizing an exciting individual and group tour to Lalibela for Ethiopian Easter for three days, from May 3rd - May 5th 2024 This is a wonderful opportunity to witness the spectacular ceremonies set against the backdrop of the breathtaking rock-hewn churches and natural beauty of this special and sacred place.
Weβd like to let you know this according to our religion Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Fasting
The rules of fasting is clearly defined in the book of Canon law.one receives forgiveness of sins and God's reward instead, and submits one self to the commandments of God enabling one to say no to acts of sin, to weaken the desire of flesh and to strengthen the spiritual good will; it is the rule of our church that believers are to fast and abstain from certain kind of foods at different season of the year. During the fasting season it is forbidden to eat meat, eggs or any dairy products. Even though it is stated in the book of canonical law that apart from Saturdays and Sundays meal is to be taken only at 3 o'clock in the afternoon; Every Wednesday and Friday are days of fasting because on
Wednesday the Jesus held a council in which they rejected and condemned our lord and on Friday then crucified him; this rule is observed in its strict nature mostly in the monasteries.
Lent in itself is divided into three parts. The first week is called the fast of Herkal; the next forty days are fasted by our Lord Jusus Christ.
And the last week is the fast of passion week which is the commemoration of the atonement of our Lord on the Cross. In particular, however, all members of our church, do fast for three days without food, beginning on Good Friday until early morning Easter Sunday.
All members of the church confiding themselves under the rule of fasting are to spend the six days in the church praying and reading the passion and prayer books and prostrating in worsh

βMeskelβ is a celebration commemorating the finding of The True Cross. The festival is known as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in other Orthodox, It is one of the most celebrated holidays in Ethiopia. One reason it is so observed is that it is believed that a part of the True Cross was brought to Ethiopia from Egypt and is said to be kept in the Amba
Geshen church
The Meskel holiday will be filled with processions to Church and eventually, the building of a bonfire and prayer while watching it burn. During Meskel, neighborhoods gather to build and then burn a large bonfire, or Demera. This is done based on the belief that Queen Eleni had a revelation in a dream. She was told that she should make a bonfire and that the smoke would show her where the True Cross was buried. So, she ordered the people of Jerusalem to bring wood and make a huge pile. After adding frankincense to it, the bonfire was lit and the smoke rose high up to the sky and returned to the ground, exactly to the spot where the Cross had been buried.
There are a number of beliefs to the meaning of Demera, with some believing that it "marks the ultimate act in the cancellation of sins, while others hold that the direction of the smoke and the final collapse of the heap indicate the course of future events.
The Meskel processions are serenaded by the ancient hymns composed by St. Yared. He composed many religious songs and hymns devoted to particular occasions and religious commemorations.
Many people will return to their villages (from the cities) to celebrate Meskel. This particular holiday is very important for people in the southern nations and the Gurage.

Ethiopian Epiphany (Timket)
Timket is the greatest festival of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church .It is incomparably the grandest, and the most spectacular celebration commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. This colorful ceremony takes place on January 18thand 19th (Tir 10 and 11 E.C) throughout the country. Although the feast is basically a two-day celebration, owing to the coincidence of the monthly feast of St. Michael, on January 20, which is the archangel and the most respected angel in Ethiopia, Timqet is known as the three-day festival.
The historical origin of the festival of Timket and its celebration with the accompaniment of the tabots allegedly goes back to the time of King Gebre Mesqel in the 6th Century A.D. The Churchβs customary practice of placing tabots in baptismal places is believed to be was started in the time of King Lalibela.
