Socialising is more than a pastime in Ethiopia–it's a way of life.

In cities all across, cafes overflow with youngsters gossiping endlessly about fashion; delalas boasting of their multi-million birr transactions; and recent immigrants from Eritrea in heated debate about politics.

Zest for life is equally compelling as you head out of the cities, and venture into the smallest of towns, deep valleys or mountain tops. It may be over a coffee, a shot of ouzo (katikala), tej be brle, or just around the camp fire, even villagers have become passionate about life, immersed in discussions about technology or trends on social media.

The result is a country riddled with immense challenges, yet full of people loving life. It is a conundrum, but I love it.

Raw meat and beer have long become the national obsession in Ethiopia, and with good reason; but how on earth can anyone prefer raw meat over beyaynetu/mehberawi is the greatest unsolved mystery of our times.

The touchstones of ethiopian cooking are deceptively simple: incalculable variety and dazzling array of colors; all traditional recipes handed down through the generations. Aside from the immense health benefits, the gastronomic experience where every bite can feel like a revelation, is out of this world.

Stop torturing yourself with depressingly tasteless diets of the West; and stick to the one by your own ancestors, they have been here on earth way long before anyone else; and experience matters.

Engage all your six senses during your culinary adventure and delight with ethiopian food.

Bon Appetit

The great rift valley is nature on a colossal scale. Pause and it starts to feel like you've landed at the end of the world. One thing that stands out at this final frontier is hospitality. The Latinos refer to it as Buena onda (good vibes). It means putting forth a welcoming attitude.

The ritual of relating and relaxing is so integral to the fabric of life in the valley, it’s hardly noticed. But they do say one thing: feta zena bel or bey, and it translates to: stay and let your guard down. And sipping crisp red wine that transcends seasons is quickly becoming part of that experience, as the region's fertile soil and unique ecosystem is attracting wine makers from all over the world.

Castel, the largest French wine-maker, was the first to arrive a few years back, and it's already transforming the food culture for the better. Dishes that combine freshly cooked goat meat and lightly baked mixed vegitables, with rich rift valley red wine, are popping in upscale restaurants in Addis, Debrezeit, Nazreth and beyond. These incredibly healthy food alternatives, with medicinal values, have real chance of replacing the death cocktail of red meat and black label that is recking havoc in the nation, and draining our foreign currency along the way.

Eating healthy and local is more affordable and sustainable than you ever imagined.

Bon Appetit.

In Ethiopia, history is not something you read about in books, nor is it something you learn about in classrooms. Here, it's a story preserved in bones of early humans in the rift valley region; delicately carved and hewn into the mountains of the northern highlands; painted on, and scared into, the skin tissues of the remote tribes of the Omo Valley; kept and passed over to generation through ceremonies, festivals, traditions and lifestyles all throughout the country. Wherever you go, the past is always present because here, perhaps more than anywhere else on earth, history is the heart and soul of the land.

Extremely delighted to see that the City of Debre Brihan is honoring her founder, the monumental figure in the history of our nation, Emperor Zera Yacob, with an impressive larger-than-life size statue.

Dream of seeing, one day, a giagantic head statue of Emperor Tewodros (the size of Adiyogi in India) high atop the mountains of Maqdala. With his vision of United Ethiopia, compeling story of robinhood and uncommon bravery, the statue is destined to become the most visited site on the African continent, and bound to return its cost many times over.

Once the site of the royal court for the most powerful emperor in Africa, Entoto Mountain Park with its incredibly dense forest, tall and century-old trees, serves as the lungs of the city below. Located at the northern end of Addis Ababa, at an altitude of 3000m, the cloud piercing entoto feels like a park in the sky in winter, and a gigantic viewing podium in summer.

Redeveloped in less than six months time, as part of the Prime Minister's commitment to sustainability and beautification of the city, the park has become a major tourist attraction, while offering employment opportunities and transforming the lives and lifestyles of those at the bottom of the economic ladder, who once barely survived gathering and selling firewood in the park.
With an entrance fee of less than $10, Entoto park offers all the peace, serenity and tranquility you would need. With an art gallery, modern cafes, horse-back riding, bicycle path and game fields, the park is a must see place for nature-lovers.

Something special about Ethiopia stirs the soul. Perhaps it is the sense of otherness on display all across the land that is as intoxicating as it is elusive. Complex and simple, raw and refined – Ethiopia always has the power to confound travelers. Vast, wide, bottomless, and limitless. There is more to see, do, touch, smell, and taste on this land than we could possibley cover here, but one thing is for sure: your preconceptions will be dashed; and your horizones, broadened.
