Tigray churches…

The rock hewn churches found on the Geralta Mountains. Abune Yimata, Mariam Korkor and Daniel churches. The churches are made of stones but doesn’t have exterior decoration structure. But they has a wonderful structures and architectural designs inside their walls and ceilings. They look like as strived by astute handmade and creates an overwhelming feelings. The layout of each church is built on the places difficult to imagine how they constructed it.

The Afar Salt Caravans
The Afar are proud, nomadic Muslims who make their living from their herds of cattle and camels. Their dry, barren land stretches from the Awash River to the deserts in the far northeast of the country in the Danakil Depression. Here is the lowest point of Africa where the terrain is as low as 100 metres below see level. The climate is incredibly hot and desert winds sweep across the horizon. Nothing grows here and nothing lives. The landscape is surreal – wide and empty. Still for centuries the Afar return to this extremely harsh and inhospitable place to carry out an important job.
Thousands of years ago the Danakil Depression was flooded and was actually part of the Red Sea. After time, bending of the coast cut off the connection to the sea. The waters dried up and left a thick layer of salt in the soil several metres thick. The camel caravans of the Afar people have been travelling here for generations in order to extract the precious salt from the soil. The salt is collected from the ground in large blocks, which are stacked together and loaded on the backs of the animals. Once all the camels are loaded the caravan sets off. Day long marches along ancient caravan routes lead up to the distant markets of the highlands where the Afar sell the salt in bars called ‘amoli’. In early years the ‘amoli’ served as a form of currency. In very remote areas it is still used as a common method of payment.

Breathe taking beauty!!!

The Arbore, also known as Erbore or Ulde, is an ethnic group living in southern Ethiopia, near Lake Chew Bahir. They are from the Omotic language family and have ancestral links to the Konso People. With a total population of 6850, the Abore population is divided into just four villages. They live in hot and flat areas and are mainly cattlemen. Like for the majority of other tribes of the Omo Valley, cows, goats and sheep are the main source of existence and value for Arbore. Woyto River, which is a natural border of the tribal areas, helps in agriculture and is the main source of water. Their name literally means: land of the bulls (Ar means bull and bore means land).

The Nyangatom - also known as Donyiro - are Nilotic agro-pastoralists inhabiting the border of southwestern Ethiopia and southeastern South Sudan and in the Ilemi Triangle with populations residing in both countries. They number approximately 30.000 with populations in both South Sudan and Ethiopia. Many Nyangatom are nomadic, residing in mobile livestock villages that may migrate several times a year. A substantial number of Nyangatom also reside in semi-permanent villages. It is common for individuals to move between mobile cattle camps and semi-permanent villages.

The Nyangatom are known to be great warriors and quite frequently, active warmongers, they are often at war with the neighboring tribes including the Hamer, Turkana, Daasanech, and Suri. The Kenyan government provides some military support to the Turkana in these conflicts. Despite the risk of intergroup conflict, many Nyangatom have bond friends with members of other groups and there are trade relationships between the Nyangatom and many of their neighbors. Along with other groups in the Lower Omo Valley, the Nyangatom face challenges to their future subsistence and cultural traditions due to large-scale agricultural projects occurring in their territory.

The Hamer, or Hamar, are an Omotic community inhabiting southwestern Ethiopia. They inhabit the territory east of the Omo River and have villages in Turmi and Dimeka. The 2007 national census reported 46,532 people in this ethnic group, of whom 957 were urban inhabitants. They are known for their practice of body adornment and wearing a multitude of colorful beads. Women adorn their necks with heavy polished iron jewelry. The Hamer men have a reputation of being less than adoring husbands. The women submit to the ritual floggings proudly and love to show the deep scars that are regarded as a proof of devotion to their husbands.
Lots of Hamar households are headed by women who have survived their husbands. A widow also has power over her husband’s younger brothers (and their livestock) if their parents are already dead. Brothers and sisters are important to each other in other ways. The most dramatic example is the ritual whipping before a brother’s cattle-leaping ceremony. The land isn’t owned by individuals; it’s free for cultivation and grazing, just as fruit and berries are free for whoever collects them. The Hamar move on when the land is exhausted or overwhelmed by weeds.

Ethiopia has in excess of 80 ethnic groups. It is simply so diverse with the people being a reflection of the biophysical environments in which they live. In the Omo the tribes have remained ‘in situ’ for thousands of years and have small ecological footprint. The rest of the population are also divided, by area, into their cultural origins. Sidama, Gurage, Oromo, Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Somali and many many more. Simply an incredible country to explore. Our photo tours are sensitive and sustainable and endeavour to bring photographers to tribes throughout lesser known areas of the Omo.
