Do you know how the Northern Lights are born?✨

The source of energy for the Northern Lights is the Sun. The phenomenon occurs when electron particles from the sun reach the Earth’s atmosphere and collide with oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules. As a result, energy is generated that is discharged as light. The colours of the Northern Lights occur in the Earth’s upper atmosphere at an altitude of about 100–200 kilometres. The Northern Lights are more common in the Arctic Circle.

Many Finnish myths and beliefs surround the Northern Lights. The Finnish name of the Northern Lights is thought to refer to a mythical animal of the folklore, the Firefox (in Finnish, the Northern Lights mean “fox’s lights”), considered the subject of every hunter’s secret wishes. The Northern Lights have also had many other names, such as the Gates of the North, Lights of Kaleva and Fires of Ruija.

The Northern Lights are best seen in a clear and dark sky. The further north, the more spectacular the Northern Lights often are.

Have you already seen the Northern Lights?🤩

Where is the best place to see the Northern Lights?💫

We are often asked about this, but it is impossible to give an exact answer. Predicting the Northern Lights is not easy, but there are some tips that can help:

- We recommend finding a place that is as open and dark as possible – where artificial lights, for example, do not bother you too much.
- Hilltops can be great places to look out at the night sky.
- Cloudless skies and cold weather are ideal for the Northern Lights, and generally the Northern Lights are best seen on both sides of midnight.
- You may have to wait for the Northern Lights to appear, so it is a good idea to dress warmly – and to enjoy nature anyway, even if you do not see this light phenomenon.

Experience the pure colour splendour of autumn in Lapland!🍂 In the northernmost part of Lapland, autumn colours usually start coming up at the beginning of September, and as far north as Rovaniemi, the colours are at their best from mid-September onwards, for example. On the slopes of the mountains and on the wilderness trails in Lapland, you can also admire the autumn colours of the ground. The brilliance of the autumn colours usually continues for about ten days after the peak of the autumn colours season.

What better way to prepare for winter than to gather colour energy from northern nature. Perhaps at the same time you can see the bright colours of the Northern Lights in the night sky. Visit and fall in love with Lapland’s autumn!💛

Did you know that the Northern Lights season starts in Lapland as early as the last days of August?💫

In summer, it is impossible to see the Northern Lights due to the ambient brightness, but when the evenings start to get dark, you can see the magnificent glow of the night sky. The Northern Lights are at their best in September-October in a dark and clear sky. The Northern Lights usually peak around midnight, but can show up during any time.

The weather always has an impact on the visibility of the Northern Lights. However, Lapland is one of the best places in the world to spot this magnificent natural phenomena.

Are you going to go see the Northern Lights this autumn?

How about spending the darkening summer evenings on a river boat? It’s still possible in August!

On the river boat cruises in Rovaniemi, you can spend a moment on the river, hear about the history of lumberjacks and step back in time. The cruises are carried out on wooden river boats.

In September, it is possible to continue cruises with catamarans. In the autumn, we will be taking trips to both Kotisaari and to see the Northern Lights. Read more about the excursions on our website:

Have you ever wondered what reindeer do in summer and what the everyday life of a reindeer farm entails?🦌

Visit a reindeer farm in the summer with us! Excursions are organised in Saariselkä and Rovaniemi, for example. In Rovaniemi, the reindeer farm excursion also includes a riverboat ride. The route to the reindeer farm travels along an old floatway in the beautiful nature of the rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki.

At the reindeer farm, you get to learn about reindeer husbandry and the daily life of reindeers, learn how to throw a lasso and cross the Arctic Circle. Before returning to the city, the farm’s employees will treat you to a cup of coffee with a traditional Finnish pastry.

Odin and other figures of Nordic mythology enchant visitors in Kittilä – have you already visited SnowVillage? ❄️

“The characters of the Finnish national epic Kalevala have been very popular, as have Odin and Loki, who are part of Nordic mythology. One of the snow hotel’s suites has the forging of the Sampo as its theme and has attracted a lot of interest from our visitors. Of course, our ice slide, which is the longest ever, is also very popular.” Maria Astrén, Destination Manager at Lapland Hotels SnowVillage, says.

As always, this year’s Lapland Hotels SnowVillage includes the Ice Restaurant and an exhibition room for arctic art with an ice bar, a movie theatre, a snow hotel with different suites to choose from, an ice slide and several spacious halls and lobbies adorned with sculptures. Totalling more than 3,000 square metres, the complex has an accommodation capacity of 12 suites, all made of snow.

Did you know that our new electric snowmobiles have a range of up to 50 kilometres? ❄️

According to the manufacturer, a fully charged snowmobile can run for 50 kilometres and its maximum speed is 60 km/h in ideal conditions. For the moment, electric snowmobiles are not suitable for longer safaris and they cannot be used to pull a sled.

Lapland Safaris’ snowmobiles are made by the Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), the world’s largest manufacturer of recreational devices. The specific model is the Lynx Adventure Electric, an electric snowmobile designed specifically for guided safari tours. We have been involved in the development of the model together with BRP from the very beginning. Our four-stroke snowmobiles are also made by the same company.

The nearly soundless snowmobiles offer an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy the nature of Lapland. We organise electric snowmobile safaris in Rovaniemi and Luosto. You are welcome to join in on the adventure!
