Experience the pure colour splendour of autumn in Lapland!🍂 In the northernmost part of Lapland, autumn colours usually start coming up at the beginning of September, and as far north as Rovaniemi, the colours are at their best from mid-September onwards, for example. On the slopes of the mountains and on the wilderness trails in Lapland, you can also admire the autumn colours of the ground. The brilliance of the autumn colours usually continues for about ten days after the peak of the autumn colours season.

Did you know that the Northern Lights season starts in Lapland as early as the last days of August?💫

In summer, it is impossible to see the Northern Lights due to the ambient brightness, but when the evenings start to get dark, you can see the magnificent glow of the night sky. The Northern Lights are at their best in September-October in a dark and clear sky. The Northern Lights usually peak around midnight, but can show up during any time.

The weather always has an impact on the visibility of the Northern Lights. However, Lapland is one of the best places in the world to spot this magnificent natural phenomena.

How about spending the darkening summer evenings on a river boat? It’s still possible in August!

On the river boat cruises in Rovaniemi, you can spend a moment on the river, hear about the history of lumberjacks and step back in time. The cruises are carried out on wooden river boats.

From Rovaniemi, you can visit a handicraft workshop and learn about the fascinating history of the northern handicraft tradition. During your visit, you will learn all about the multi-purpose reindeer antler, which has been used as a material in various everyday objects for decades. You can improve your manual skills with professional guidance and make your own souvenirs to keep as a memento of your visit to Lapland.

Have you ever wondered what reindeer do in summer and what the everyday life of a reindeer farm entails?🦌

Visit a reindeer farm in the summer with us! Excursions are organised in Saariselkä and Rovaniemi, for example. In Rovaniemi, the reindeer farm excursion also includes a riverboat ride. Odin and other figures of Nordic mythology enchant visitors in Kittilä – have you already visited SnowVillage? ❄️

“The characters of the Finnish national epic Kalevala have been very popular, as have Odin and Loki, who are part of Nordic mythology. One of the snow hotel’s suites has the forging of the Sampo as its theme and has attracted a lot of interest from our visitors. Of course, our ice slide, which is the longest ever, is also very popular.” Maria Astrén, Destination Manager at Lapland Hotels SnowVillage, says.

As always, this year’s Lapland Hotels SnowVillage includes the Ice Restaurant and an exhibition room for arctic art with an ice bar, a movie theatre, a snow hotel with different suites to choose from, an ice slide and several spacious halls and lobbies adorned with sculptures. Totalling more than 3,000 square metres, the complex has an accommodation capacity of 12 suites, all made of snow.

Did you know that our new electric snowmobiles have a range of up to 50 kilometres? ❄️

According to the manufacturer, a fully charged snowmobile can run for 50 kilometres and its maximum speed is 60 km/h in ideal conditions. For the moment, electric snowmobiles are not suitable for longer safaris and they cannot be used to pull a sled.

Lapland Safaris’ snowmobiles are made by the Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), the world’s largest manufacturer of recreational devices. The specific model is the Lynx Adventure Electric, an electric snowmobile designed specifically for guided safari tours. We have been involved in the development of the model together with BRP from the very beginning. Our four-stroke snowmobiles are also made by the same company.

The nearly soundless snowmobiles offer an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy the nature of Lapland. We organise electric snowmobile safaris in Rovaniemi and Luosto. You are welcome to join in on the adventure!

As Christmas draws nearer, the hustle and bustle never cease in Santa Claus Village, near the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi! 🎅

November saw us celebrate the opening of the Christmas season. Numerous visitors followed the festivities on location in Santa Claus Village and remotely through our livestream. The event featured music and a speech by Santa Claus himself, who wished for peace on earth and good will to all.

It has been a busy month in Santa Claus Village: Compared to the previous year, we have received twice as many visitors from all over the world. For December, we are expecting an all time record for visitors!

Our travel family will soon increase in size as seasonal employees start work at our destinations – early in the winter season, more than 600 people from 10 different countries will be working for Lapland Safaris.

Our first seasonal workers get started with sales and preparations in September, and by the end of October, our safari and husky guides will arrive in Lapland. While the winter season starts at slightly different times at different destinations, mid-November will see the largest influx of seasonal workers in Lapland.

By December, the elves and Christmas guides will join our ranks – each one wearing their own elf hat and ready to assist Santa in spreading Christmas cheer.

Winter arrived in Lapland early this year. Northern and Central Lapland received their first cover of snow on 20 September, a significant deviation from the regional statistical average of 9 October in Saariselkä and mid-October in Rovaniemi. Now is also the best time to see the northern lights. 💫

While the ground may be white, you should keep in mind that 5–10 centimetres of snow do not make the terrain passable or fit for safaris. Bodies of water begin to freeze over in the late autumn, and this is when they are at their most dangerous as well. Our winter season snowmobile safaris will begin when the conditions are safe, which means early December at the latest.

Lapland Hotels & Safaris has been awarded a total of 27 Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) labels. The number is almost one-tenth of all STF labels awarded in Finland! ❄️ This means that almost all our Lapland Hotels & Safaris units have received Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland label during the past year, which is a sign of commitment to long-term sustainability work.

In the last year, for example, our company, Lapland Safaris has created a more comprehensive animal welfare program and criteria for husky farms. In addition, the experienced service company has been actively involved in creating dog sledding safety instructions together with the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). We are also recalculating our carbon footprint and will introduce the first electric snowmobiles for our safaris in Rovaniemi and Luosto this winter.

Lapland Hotels SnowVillage will open its doors to day visitors on December 25, 2023. The theme of SnowVillage for the upcoming winter is Nordic mythology.

Lapland has always been a place full of mystique, so the magnificent stories of Nordic mythology fit the theme of the SnowVillage perfectly.

“Many people find the theme fascinating, which is why we are again expecting a large number of both international and domestic visitors. They get to admire, for example, the legendary Mjölnir hammer of Thor, Alfheim, the land of the elves, and, of course, the famous tales of Kalevala, from the Defence of the Sampo to Väinämöinen,” Technical Manager Tomi Kurtakko explains.

As always, this year’s Lapland Hotels SnowVillage includes the Ice Restaurant and an exhibition room for arctic art with an ice bar, a movie theatre, and a snow hotel with different suites to choose from.

“The Ice Bar is now styled according to Valhalla, which is the residence of gods and especially the destiny of warriors and heroes. The Ice Bar also features Odin’s throne and a bar counter made of ice that is used for serving drinks,” Kurtakko reveals.

Have you ever wondered what huskies do in the autumn? They train, of course! 🐾

After the summer’s rest season, and once the weather has cooled off enough, the dogs can start to practice sled pulling with a quad bike. The goal is to give the sled dogs three months of practice before the winter season and dog sledding tours start. The dogs’ food intake is also increased during this period. Winter is the busiest time for sled dogs, but the huskies clearly enjoy the physical activity and sled pulling!

Lapland Husky Safaris has a total of 779 dogs in four kennels. The sled dogs return to work in late November. Come and visit our animal friends!

Nature in Lapland is at its richest in September, offering experiences for all the senses!

Temperatures may well rise to almost twenty degrees Celsius during the daytime, but as the night frost sets in, nature begins to prepare for winter, which is visible in the wonderful colours of the trees. The autumn colour season that starts at the beginning of September will continue long into the autumn.

As the evenings darken, you should direct your gaze towards the northern sky: you never know when the blazing Northern Lights will appear dancing against the dark sky. The best place to watch the Northern Lights is where there is not too much other light and where you can just take your time to stop and experience.
