Set within the rolling hills of perhaps the most unspoiled area of the Dordogne, Tabary manor house was rebuilt after a fire caused by lightning in 1770 by a draper from Excideuil. It must have been a rich and thriving town judging by the number of exceptional buildings dating from these times. The Farmhouse and Dovecote date from much earlier, 17th or 16th century and the buildings still follow the plans made in 1820. This exclusive location makes it a perfect place to holiday or take a longer break. Hundreds of nearby historical attractions, Castles, Gardens, Caves, Medieval Towns, Markets, stunning countryside and delicious restaurants right on the doorstep. The domaine includes three letting houses, a huge swimming pool, playing field, badminton, 2 pingpong tables and 20 acres of private flora and fauna rich woodlands and riverside, perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
Richard and Luisa moved here in 1992 from Devon together with their children who started almost immediately in school in Excideuil. Within days the children were communicating with their contemporaries in a wonderful mix of languages, soon to become French indistinguishable from the locals! The gites were a priority to get running as bookings had already been taken for that summer, and the long works were begun to make the property habitable after its ten years of being empty. Some works still continue!
Tabary is now a good example of a gite business with 25 years of successful summer lets and more recently an excellent record of longer term lets out of season. But that alone does not do the place justice. This is a most attractive group of buildings, authentic in design and style, a smart slate roof on the manor house, pretty red tiles on the other houses and barns all centred on a magnificent gravel courtyard. It is a gem and there are not many like it.
Richard and Luisa together have succeeded in making it a comfortable family home with a successful gite business. Apart from some initial works and a major re-roofing in 2016 they have done nearly all the works themselves - property maintenance, gardening and domestic chores! They have help from a cleaner for the changeover days which can be very hot in summer.
