Monday 11th March 2024 - 4 days

Itinerary
DAY 1: After a late morning ferry crossing we travel to the Ypres area stopping at Essex Farm Cemetery. We see its memorial to Canadian Officer John McCrae who wrote the famous poem In Flanders Fields here in 1915. This led to the poppy being taken as the emblem of remembrance for those who gave their lives in this, and subsequent conflicts, by the British Legion. After, we travel on to our hotel.

DAY 2: Today you travel to Ypres where there is time to explore the town. See the Flanders Field Museum (entry not included), the Grote Markt, the Cloth Hall and the Menin gate – the memorial contains the names of 54,389 men who died in the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. In the afternoon you visit Tyne Cot Cemetery – the largest Commonwealth War Cemetery in the World and then travel on to Lange mark German Cemetery as a comparison. We make a short visit to the Yorkshire Trench and dugout before returning to Ypres where there are many restaurants for dinner (not included). At 8pm you participate in the Last Post at Menin Gate.

DAY 3: We travel to The Somme area. 1st July 1916, the first day of the Somme offensive was the bloodiest in British history with over 20,000 men killed and 60,000 injured on this day. Over the 142 day offensive 420,000 British were killed, along with 205,00 French and more than 500,000 German men.

You visit:
• Lochnagar Crater – Measuring 300ft across and 90 ft deep it was one of 16 blown under German lines on 1 July 2016
• Thiepval War Memorial – the largest British War Memorial in the World, it contains the names of over 73,000 men with no known grave who fell in the Somme.
• Newfoundland Memorial Park – dedicated to the men of Newfoundland Regiment who suffered appalling losses here on 1st July 1916. There are exposed trenches and the opportunity to see how close allied and German trenches were to each other at this point.
• Vimy Ridge – The dramatic Vimy Memorial is dedicated to the Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed in the First World War and to those fallen in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

DAY 4: Homeward bound with a stop at a supermarket on the way.

French Chateau Experience - Chateau de Vauchelles, Picardie
Monday 10th July - 4 days!!!

You won’t find a more authentic experience than this! Stay in a traditional French chateau and experience this charming French building. The Chateau de Vachelles was built from 1595 and has been in the same family ever since! Run by the friendly Baron and Baroness Ghislain de Lassus Saint-Genies, the elegant bedrooms are all different and are in a traditional style – a clever mix of old and new and are finished to a high specification. The Chateau is surrounded by various green spaces including a French-style garden, an English garden and the Cour D’Honneur (Court of Honour or main courtyard) and there is an outdoor pool. Your stay includes trips around the beautiful Somme Estuary, and traditional local small towns and fishing ports. This is a unique experience with only 16 passengers per trip!

Itinerary
Day 1: Eurotunnel crossing to Calais and around 90 minutes drive to the charming coastal town of Le Crotoy where there is time to explore. After, it’s circa 45 minutes to the Chateau with time to settle in. Our first night includes dinner in the Chateau.

Day 2: After continental breakfast continental breakfast with tea or coffee, fresh croissants, freshly baked bread, French fromage, orange juice and home-made jams the host will show you around the Chateau and its grounds before you set off to Amiens, home to the largest gothic Cathedral in northern France and is well known for its Roman “hortillinages” or ‘water gardens’. Shops and cafes line the Quartier St-Leu’s narrow streets. Tonight, we have dinner in a local French restaurant.

Day 3: Today we set off to explore the local area. You visit the fishing port of Le Treport, see the fine villas at Mer-Les-Bains and visit beautiful St. Valery on the Somme estuary, departure place for William the Conqueror and prison for Joan of Arc. There is time to explore this lovely town. Dinner at the Chateau.
Day 4: After breakfast it’s goodbye to Chateau de Vauchelles and back to England. But not before you’ve had a chance to stock up with local goodies at a French supermarket.

The accommodation is homely and spacious with rooms delightfully furnished in traditional French Chateau style. The Chateau is not a hotel – it is a family home.
Two (3 – course) evening meals are prepared and cooked for us by the hosts at the Chateau and are taken as a group. Includes a glass of quality wine, mineral water and coffee after. One evening meal is taken at a French restaurant (no drinks included).
There is no lift at the Chateau and rooms are via a staircase to the first (and second) floor. There are 3 rooms on the ground floor (4 steps to the door) but they share two bathrooms. They are £30 less than the price above. All other rooms are en-suite and centrally heated.
There is porterage available only to those that cannot manage themselves – you should expect to carry your own suitcase upstairs.

Noël Coward’s effervescent comedy of bad manners – written in three days when he was 24 – is set in a country house in Berkshire. Judith Bliss is a famous West End actress, technically retired. Husband David churns out romantic novels. Their grown-up children – Simon and Sorel – resolutely refuse to grow up. The pathologically self-absorbed Blisses invite a quartet of hapless guests for the week-end : a career diplomat, a predatory society girl, a conventional sporty chap and a sweet-natured flapper. The guests turn out to be cannon fodder in the family’s ongoing solipsistic fantasies. The sociopathic hosts are briefly in-credulous when their guests creep away after breakfast.
Hay Fever has something for everyone. The rude bohemians in the audience love watching themselves in action. More conventional theatre-goers relish the enactment of their worst social nightmares. A delirious roller-coaster of a play, encased in wit, comic brio and emotional truth.
