06/05/2024

🌳 Rokeby Park is a country house with parklands just outside Barnard Castle. Italianate in style, it has been described as “one of the purest examples of the neo-Palladian villa”🌳

🏛️ The hall was completed in 1735 by Sir Thomas Robinson who owned it until 1769, when he sold it to JS Morritt, an ancestor of the current owner. The history of the site, however, goes back many centuries earlier. Nearby Greta Bridge was a Roman Encampment. By the reign of Edward II the land belonged to the Rokeby family; their early medieval home was burned by the Scots in a raid following the English defeat at the Battle of Bannockburn. A house was later built on the same site which passed from the Rokebys to the Robinsons during the reign of the first Stuart king, James I. It is now the private home of Sir Andrew Morritt and is open to the public on selected days.

🖼️ Rokeby Park is said to have hundreds of valuable paintings. It is the original English home of the famous painting The Toilet of Venus by Diego Velázquez, his only surviving n**e, it represents female poetic beauty and was once owned by the King of Spain. The original now hangs in the National Gallery, London and has been targeted twice by protesters. A copy hangs in the saloon at Rokeby Park.

🖼️ In 2016 the only known painting of the coronation of the French king Louis XIV was discovered in the stables. The painting by an unknown artist, depicting the 1654 ceremony, had hung in Rokeby Park since 1880. Veronique Gerard-Powell, chief curator and senior lecturer at the Sorbonne, in Paris, said: "This is the only painted representation of the coronation. There is no other like it - it really is quite unique."

📚Sir Walter Scott frequently visited his friend JS Morritt at Rokeby Hall where he would stay. Scott loved exploring the county, especially the rolling countryside of Teesdale and Weardale. Rokeby Hall provided the setting for Rokeby - Scott’s epic poem from 1813. Scott commissioned friend Turner to paint 20 watercolours to accompany the poem, which included the Meeting of the Waters, where the River Tees meets the River Greta and Egglestone Abbey.

📌In 2024, Rokeby Park will be open to visitors:
Monday 6th May (Early May Bank Holiday), Monday 27th May (Spring Bank Holiday), Tuesday 28th May, and then every Monday and Tuesday from Monday 3rd June to Tuesday 3rd September. Opening times from 2-5pm with last admission at 4.30pm. Historic Houses members visit for free 🤩
