It was a quiet, soft day yesterday. We walked around the Usk reservoir, the clouds obscured the top of the Carmarthen Fans but we stayed dry. Although the sun was hidden we found some wonderful colours in the new foliage and this rather splendid beetle!
The western side of the Brecon Beacons is much quieter than the eastern side. We just saw a few fishermen at the start of our walk and then, not a soul!

Bank holiday, so we chose to look at Pen y Fan rather than climb it. This is viewed from the south. The weather held off and we only saw a handful of walkers. Then lunch at The Old Barn Tearooms; run by the same family for 20years and our first time back after 9 years, what were we thinking! This place is a gem frequented by folks up from Merthyr and hardy walkers, don’t miss it for lunch or a cream tea.

Here are some pictures of what I have been busy with in the last couple of weeks. 2 more ewes to produce and then I can get a good night’s sleep!
Why not come and see the lambs and if the weather is still a bit iffy then the waterfalls are spectacular and close by.
Minimum of 3 night stay and special offers for couples.
David and I would love to welcome you.

Madog Barns backyard! I love this quieter part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
We should all follow even if it is very familiar to us.

The high rainfall this winter has made the waterfalls impressive and there are plenty of signs of brighter days ahead.

Situated on the moorlands of Fforest Fawr Unesco Global Geopark, the Maen Llia standing stone is more than 3.5 metres tall and nearly 3 metres wide. Estimated to be erected between 2300 – 800 BCE, Maen Llia is one of many bronze age sites located across the park.

Steeped in legend, Maen Llia’s exact purpose and function is not known although there are many different suggestions and interpretations. One tale of Maen Llia says that the stone sometimes travels to the river to drink – this legend may come from the long shadow cast from the stone which reaches the river when the sun is close to the horizon ☀️🪨

The weather is set fine apart from a little sprinkle of snow tonight!
We should be taking delivery of over 800 hedging whips in the next few days but luckily, this coming weekend looks to be dry and just above freezing so we should be able to make a start at getting them planted.
Madog Barn is available for short lets of three nights with flexible start and finish dates during January. (Use our website for this offer).
Check out the weather and escape for a few days in the hills!
Why not make it a chance to offset your carbon footprint, plant a few trees and get a discount on your holiday!

Why not pick up a hamper at The Black Mountains Smokery on your way to Madog Barn?
The International Welsh Rarebit Centre is just down the road from us and one of our favourite haunts.

There are rich pickings on a trip through the mountains and valleys of Bannau Brycheiniog, formerly known as the Brecon Beacons. Whipping along these narrow lanes, you’ll discover a winery, a smokery, a roastery and a country inn where chefs riff creatively on hyper-local ingredients.
