Loveboards are made in the heart of Wales, using homegrown sycamore. We know the provenance of all our timber, and each board has a tag attached with its precise source details. Loveboards are unique, because not only do they use homegrown sycamore, but also the end-grain blocks used in their construction are sawn from the very centre of small trees that have been felled as part of ongoing woodlan
d restoration schemes. No one else, to the best of my knowledge, is using this material in quite the same way. Each board is 50 mm (2 inches) in thickness and has inset finger holds in the ends for ease of carrying and turning over the board. Our special lovespoon emblem
The carving of Lovespoons is a centuries-old tradition in Wales. Young men used to carve them from a single piece of wood to give to their loved ones, so the lovespoon is a very appropriate symbol to adorn our Loveboards. Why sycamore? Sycamore timber is beautiful, yet practical, being extremely fine-grained with a hardness that confers great durability, making it ideal for cutting boards. This is further enhanced by the use of the timber in its end-grain form. We carefully select the blocks for their individuality, in terms of their colour and unique grain patterns, often created by so-called defects, such as knots, which make our boards so much more interesting and attractive. Furthermore, sycamore is the perfect material for kitchenware as it does not stain or taint the food prepared on it. How Loveboards are made
The timber for our boards is sourced directly from the woodlands of Wales. The trees we select are brought to a local sawmill and milled into square lengths with a specially designed saw, then the square lengths are crosscut into the blocks that are combined to produce the finished boards. One of the best things about using end grain is that it can be dried ‘green’, meaning it does not require air drying for a long period. In fact, it can be dried in a kiln in a week or two. Once the timber is dry, the process of producing the Loveboards can begin. A good deal of specialist knowledge and experience, gained over many years working with end grain timber, is brought to bear in the production of our boards. The selection, jointing, gluing and finishing is carried out to a very high standard, by a highly skilled craftsman, to ensure that your board has that special, hand made feel and unique appearance. A huge amount of care and enjoyment goes into the creation of each and every board and we hope that this shines through in the finished product. Finally, the boards are finished with several coats of food-safe oil that will protect the boards and make their care that much easier too!
