We thought it was strange that our chickens had suddenly stopped laying a few weeks ago then we saw some egg shells outside the pen. On further investigation we caught this cheeky crow red-beaked! Now we have to try and beat him to it!

We think this beech tree was planted when the house was built, a mossy path leads down to it from the bottom of the garden. There have been ceremonies here, morning talks and moments to just soak in the sound of the river and the green. So much green.
It is a protected area, SSSI, partly due to the abundance of moss and lichen amongst other things. A very special bit of woodland that we are really lucky to have on our doorstep.

There was a big crop of apples this year which inspired our first venture into cider making at Northmoor.
Thanks to Buttercross Community Orchard for their traditional pressing service in Dunster. They were amazing and made light work of our apples. The juice was delicious, fingers crossed for the cider.

We like to think one of the charms of Northmoor is the rustic walled gardens and untouched historical features but sometimes they do need repair!

We are repairing and repointing these walls with traditional lime mortar. They were part of the original stables before they moved them away from the house, now the parking area when you arrive.

What an amazing photo, one of our guests captured this bumble bee on the wisteria at Northmoor. They are busy all over the gardens now with the bushes coming into flower - such a beautiful time of year.

Bee update, this hive is busy building comb today. Honeybees use several parts of their body to build a honeycomb. These festoons are formed where the bees cling to each otherΒ to generate some heat in order to increase the temperature. In doing so they facilitate the secretion of wax from glands on the abdomen. Other worker bees chew this wax to soften it; then they add it to the honeycomb.
