A great vid from one of our volunteers Pete Fox of the wonderful guys at CRT Ellesmere refilling the dry dock so I could get back to Lyneal Wharf ready for my first hirers
It's our Open Day at Lyneal Wharf today and one of our Day Skippers, Michael, has been talking to Kate Tebby of BBC Radio Shropshire about his love of canals and volunteering with Lyneal Trust.
The clip ends with some reflections from a guest about his Grandad's 90th birthday trip which we've been featuring this week.

It's finally here! Have a wonderful Halloween, and be careful out there tonight if you're trick-or-treating!
Our second spooky canal tale - is it myth or history?
The Burgedin Lock Mystery - Montgomery Canal
At Burgedin, Powys, a picturesque lock keeper's cottage was also the site of an ill-fated romance. Depending on the source, either the lock keeper's wife or Princess Eira of Wales were walled up alive here as punishment for trying to flee with their young lover. Her angry spirit is said to haunt the cottage, which is now a waterway office; her ghost has been seen near the fireplace in the basement, and apparently, objects are constantly moved when no one is there.
These are a few of the incredible pictures which we've shared during 2021. Don't you think they capture the British countryside at its best?
Our thanks to the photographers who captured these stunning images.
As Halloween is just around the corner, we thought we'd look at some of the creepier canal stories we've heard over the years! Today, let's look at the Afanc.
Urban legends like 'the alligator in the sewer' are often told, but there is a possibility that sightings in Wales could be related to an even older legend. Depending on who you ask, the Afanc resembles a crocodile, beaver or dwarf. Stories about the creature have been passed down from the Dark Ages - Lewis Glyn Cothi described it in his poem in the 15th century. According to legend, it devoured people who stumbled into its waters and, when enraged, might break riverbanks and drown livestock. One story tells of how a young girl coaxed it out of the river to be relocated in a remote mountain lake because its hide was too tough to penetrate and kill. Llangorse Lake, near Brecon, is also associated with the Afanc, and it's famous for its large pike; in 1999, a water skier was bitten by a 5-6ft pike. So, maybe the root of this myth isn't an alligator after all, but a very real and huge Welsh pike. What do you think?
Did you know that canal boat holidays are actually one of the best ways to have a holiday while maintaining a low carbon footprint? It is estimated that the carbon footprint of a canal boat holiday is equivalent to 5% of the emissions caused by a 2-hour flight! Your electricity and heating would typically be supplied from the engine, and you can always try to eat at local pubs along the canal, most of whom try to source locally produced food and drink. All in all, canal boating is one of the most eco-friendly ways to see the countryside and the best of the UK's wildlife.
We're looking forward to welcoming guests from single households next month, subject to UK and Welsh Government COVID-19 regulations in force at the time.
