It's that time of year again. The summer holidays are here and we don't want to see them spoiled through a lack of local knowledge.

These little critters bury themsleves in the sand and the sting from their dorsal fin, should you stand on one, is a holiday souvenir that you won't forget in a hurry.

It's excruciating!

Wear beach shoes! Especailly if the tide is more than half way out. Weever fish are found on all UK beaches.

Another beautiful morning, do you think we finally have Summer!

A short car ride or a walk along the coast path from the cottage you will find the spectacular white cliffs that form the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs.

Between March and August the cliffs are home to more than half a million sea birds including gannets, guillemots and those beloved puffins. A spectacular sight! You can watch the Gannets diving into the sea, there are more here than anywhere else in the UK.

But it's not just seabirds, you can spot skylarks, barn owls, corn buntings and other birdlife.
Dogs are welcome on short leads and you will also find a cafe, shop and visitor centre here.

How to describe The Bay?
Its a village dedicated to providing the best holiday experience. It caters for families especially those with younger children, those wanting a holiday with their dog, and couples just wanting a quiet break. It has leisure facilities and an onsite pub and restaurant but without the 'holiday park' club style entertainment complex meaning it retains a peaceful atmosphere.
In short it's quite unique. If this appeals to you why not come try it for yourself.

Summer dates are already fully booked and Autumn dates are filling fast. If you are thinking of a break at The Dog House don't miss out, book your break now!

🦭 Protect The Marinelife! 🦭

Using flying rings at the coast can pose serious risks to seals. Young seals learn through play and are particularly inquisitive. They will explore these lost toys and it is easy for seals (and other marine creatures) to become entangled in this type of flying ring. Please enjoy the beach responsibly and keep our marinelife safe.

If you see any seals entangled in anything, please contact BDLMR on 01825 765546.

This seal was one of the lucky ones and rescuers managed to remove the ring. Some are not so lucky!

A visit to The Dog House is not complete without popping to the Beach Cafe at Hunmanby Gap! Makes a nice 'round trip' walk the coast path to Hunmanby Gap, stop off at the cafe and back along the beach! Coffee and good selection of cakes or snacks or I can thoroughly recommend the breakfast! Welcome to Heartbeat Country (aka Goathland)

Goathland is a moorland village located on the eastern edge of the North York Moors National Park. As you stroll through the village, with sheep leisurely grazing in the background, it’s easy to feel transported back to the 1960s. The area is famously known as Heartbeat Country! Goathland is situated approximately 20 minutes from Whitby (approx 9 miles).

There are 2 folklore legends associated with Filey Brigg.
The first is that the Brigg was built by the devil and while he was chipping away at the rocks he dropped his hammer into the sea.
Reaching into the water he grabbed not his hammer but a fish. Ha, Dick he cried and so the fish Haddock was named. It is also said that the distinctive markings on the side of all haddock are the fingerprints of the devil !!
The second legend is my favourite.
Apparently a fierce dragon used to live here and he would terrorise the locals catching their fishing boats and taking all their fish however he had one weak spot, he had a real sweet tooth, so the fisherman's wives used to bake cakes for him to stop him taking their catch.
Mary, the wife of one of the fishermen called Ralph Parkin made a huge cake made of oatmeal, ginger and treacle. The greedy dragon put so much into his mouth that his teeth stuck together and he couldn't open his mouth. He went to the sea and tried to wash the cake out of his mouth but instead he drowned.
The skeleton of the dragon now forms Filey Brigg, and since that day Yorkshire sticky cake is now known as Parkin.
So next time you walk along Filey Brigg think of these legends and think which do you believe??

Filey Brigg is the narrow peninsula which forms the northern end of Filey Bay. It's cliffs reach a height of 20 meters and is a site of special scientific interest and has also been designated as a local nature reserve. From the top you can spot sea birds and if you are lucky the odd passing dolphin as well as giving you spectacular views across Filey Bay to Bempton Cliffs one way and Scarborough the other. At low tide the rock pools at the bottom of the Brigg are great to explore.
The Brigg is also the meeting point of 2 trails, The Cleveland Way which goes from Helmsley to Filey and The Yorkshire Wolds Way which takes you from Filey to Hessel.
But much more than this, The Brigg is the stuff of local folklore and Legends, but I'll save that for another post!!
