Last week a very bedraggled homing pigeon was wondering around the farmyard. From his ring we tracked his owner to Fife in Scotland, we agreed to feed him and give him time to build his strength up. The big moment came on Sunday when we took him north up on the moors to “set him on his way home”. No phone call from the owner last night so I checked this morning and he hadn’t made it. Well , we did our best.
Guess what? 11 am he turned up in our barn looking for his breakfast!

Another beautiful morning. Shelby and her lambs are out in the nursery for a day or two before rejoining the flock and we’ve had an excellent haul from the hen house. Scrambled eggs for lunch then😁

Our beautiful Shelby sheep. We have all been rather excited to see her become a mum this year. Shelby was not a pet lamb nor has she had much handling, she decided at some point over the last year that humans were not scary and now holds a special place in all of our hearts ♥️

I can’t really complain but after 14 years and 130,000 miles Whos Der? has some rot. I can’t think of anything I’d rather drive, so I’ve optimistically renovated a chassis. Just need to pop in on now, shouldn’t take long😁

Following last week's news that high-tech arial mapping shows that the hedges in the UK measure 390,000 km and could go round the world 10 times, it's great to see a little more conservation work coming to fruition today. A big thank you to the Nidderdale Conservation Volunteers who have just completed laying this hedge, in traditional Yorkshire style and also to Simon Poulter and his excellent fencing skills. We planted this one about 25 years ago and it's really bio-diverse so we are looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next couple of years.

A huge thank you to our local cub and scout group for helping us with hedge planting today. We think we have planted around 1200 hedge plants today and each of the children planted their own tree.

A big thank you to Liz Milner, the Nidderdale Conservation Volunteers and Nidderdale National Landscape for the work they are putting in at the farm.
We planted this hedge about 30 years ago, it's quite species rich but for some reason, we've never found the time to lay it. The volunteers have spent two days laying it in "Yorkshire Style" . The weather hasn't been kind but the cutting, trimming and laying is nearly finished and it's looking great.

One of our favourite times of year, hay time 🥰 Last year we made the decision to go back to small bales to let the kids and their friends experience hay time. Luckily they loved it and now look forward to it every year.

A very special night tonight in the company of Beryl, one of our guests in Waterwheel Cottage. At 87 years old she was determined to walk up the hill to see our rebuilt Anderson shelter and indeed she did.
Beryl lived in West Ham as a child and spent her first night in an Anderson shelter at the age of four. She could still picture herself and her sister sitting on the bunk beds and showed me where they had pinned pictures of Donald Duck and Micky Mouse on the door. Beryl's house was bombed that night and the whole family lived in the shelter for the next 18 months!
It has been a real privilege to meet you and hear some of your memories Beryl, we hope you and your family will be back soon.
