Having been closed for rentals last year, we are open again for 2023. We still have some slots left, but they are going fast.

Our renovated former croft house sleeps five. Set in extensive enclosed gardens, it is the perfect base for exploring both Harris and Lewis. There's plenty to do at home in Rhenigidale as well. The sheltered bay makes it ideal for kayaking and sea swimming, and there are fantastic walks right outside the door.

We'd like to share some information about focus groups for a Glasgow University project on ticks and tick-borne diseases:

If you might be interested in taking part in a two-hour focus group (£20 remuneration per participant) exploring experiences with ticks and tick-borne diseases please get in touch at [email protected]

Week commencing August 15th TBC

What makes viruses tick? is a project led by the Brennan Lab at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research
The project aims to raise awareness of ticks and tick-borne diseases across Scotland, and empower people to make informed decisions when accessing the outdoors.

We have a number of layers to the project
• A citizen science platform encouraging members of the public across Scotland to submit sightings of ticks, which can be added to our tick map. This is found here https://www.tcv.org.uk/scotland/what-makes-viruses-tick/

• Working closely with communities in areas of Scotland where tick populations are a problem, to understand their concerns and co-design resources that can be used to protect, empower and benefit communities. This would involve establishing focus groups within communities to learn about their experiences of ticks and tick-borne disease, allowing us to work with communities to co-design resources that work for them. These focus groups have funding associated to pay for people's time and would happen in person over the next two and a half years.
• Additionally, we would hope to encourage knowledge exchange between communities already affected by ticks and tick borne disease, and those who are starting to feel the effects or likely will in the coming years. This is very important to us, we want to ensure that community voices are heard, listened to and valued.
• We will also be working with TCV Scotland to empower existing volunteer groups across Scotland to be trained in how to carry out field surveys for ticks, with the long-term goal of identifying sites that our researchers could use for tick collection and analysis.
We are keen to work with community members on Harris, and are also speaking to groups on Islay and Orkney in the first instance.

It's been great to welcome guests back to Sith-Phort this year and to hear how much they have enjoyed themselves. We're now looking forward to returning to Rhenigidale ourselves. This year, we shall be accompanied by the patter of tiny paws, as our Labrador Retriever Mara has had puppies. We are currently looking for responsible owners for two remaining puppies from the litter, both males. Ready for collection in Glasgow from 13 Sept or on Harris from 17 Sept. KC reg'd and microchipped, with five weeks' insurance and first vaccinations - and already media stars. Email me on [email protected] for more information.

Labrador Mara and her owners have been working around the clock keeping her large brood of eleven puppies thriving.
