Greta Hall Holiday Cottages, Keswick, The Lake District

Greta Hall Holiday Cottages, Keswick, The Lake District Greta Hall has now been sold and it's time to say goodbye to all our guests and particularly those guests who have become friends over the years.
(13)

I want to take this opportunity to say a deep and heart-felt thank-you to everyone who has been to stay, write, paint, draw, film, make music, connect with their ancestors, research, drink tea or sit and watch the Fells. Once we've had a chance to breathe and take stock of life, we'll be re-decorating the The Coach House and offering it during school holidays to those guests who have become friend

s over the years. It sleeps 6 in three double rooms - one with ensuite shower room. Kitchen/dining room seats 8-10
Living room on the 1/F with stunning view of Skiddaw and Grisdale
Family bathroom with bath and shower. We have a travel cot & two 'beds in a bag' for little ones. (All our belongings will be locked into the little attic room so the house will be totally clear of our clutter)

Full use of the garden, woodland and river from those who have become devotees of Wim Hof; I do get plenty of odd looks as I wander down in my swim suit in the hail and snow to have my daily 'dunk!'

Due to the layout of the Coach House, it's very difficult to restrict fur & muddy pawed guests, with so we're going to have to ponder

Parking for 3 cars with access via Stanger Street. There is a small catch! Rental comes with four outdoor cats! Noggin, Addleba, Vellyn and Tips who will need feeding twice a day. They are generally outdoor cats although will come in for snuggles if you want them to. Their food and dishes are outside the front door and they will remind you! Hopefully you'll feel it's a small inconvenience.

We are delighted that they all chose Greta Hall for a week of incredible creativity in the run up to tonight's performance.

I wholeheartedly agree with Paul Wilmott the artist behind the mural of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Robert Southey the author of the first printed version of the 'Three Bears' should be a national hero. Many thanks to the ITV crew who visited Robert Southey's Study at Greta Hall today, some much deserved national publicity on ITV North tomorrow night for the 'Entire Man of Letters'. Paul Wilmott's mural in the bus shelter at the top of the Penrith Road was unveiled today.

Imagine a house deeply rooted into the landscape and which lets you seamlessly connect to the outdoors. Imagine views of the Cumbrian skies and Fells from every window. Imagine after spending hours on social/business networks and on-line school, giving busy minds another focus. A focus which nourishes hearts, souls, minds and the connectively we’ve missed? Gather yourself and those you love, take time to collect your thoughts and unwind out on the Fells, with a cup of tea in the garden or curl on the sofa with a book, rest your eyes, swim in clean natural water surrounded by vast landscapes then unwind around the table with family and friends.

A verse from one of Wordsworth's many poems to mark the 250th Anniversary - the imagery suits the serene sounds and scenery from our bedroom windows. We can only deduce his time at Greta Hall inspired such poetry!
To Sleep
A flock of sheep that leisurely pass by
One after one: the sound of rain, and bees
Murmuring; the fall of rivers, winds and seas,
Smooth fields, white sheets of water, and pure sky .

Our thoughts tonight turn to 'Greta', a Thames Sailing Barge built in 1892 and worked carrying munitions on the Thames during WW2. Along with her crew, 'Greta' took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940. She is the oldest Dunkirk Little Ship that is still working today and is a member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships. Our heart-felt thanks.

Our Story

Sited on a little hill in two acres of garden and woodland, Greta Hall has amazing views over the top of town to Catbells, Grisdale pike and Walla Crag - with views at the back are to Latrigg and Skiddaw.

Bordered at the back by the River Greta, a bridge a few metres from our back gate takes you into Fitz Park (playground, swimming pool, museum, tennis courts) with the footpath to Latrigg & Skiddaw a little beyond that. Out of the front gate you’re a couple of minutes walk from the centre of town and just ten minutes walk to Derwentwater and the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’. With hundreds of trails to choose from, beautiful places to explore, wonderful water to ‘wild swim’, sail, fish or canoe, there are thousands of perfect spots to sit and read/draw/contemplate; Keswick truly has something for everyone.

We have plenty of tables & chairs in the garden for al-fresco if the weather is lovely or simply wrapped up with a hot cup of tea. There is also a slate BBQ & fire pit should you fancy a summer BBQ or a Winter bonfire with melting marshmallows. There is plenty in the child-friendly garden to keep youngsters and oldsters happy for hours in all weathers: Climbing fort, ‘princess tower’, swings, rope swings, tree-house, rabbit & guinea-pig rescue centre, chickens to feed, a woodland to make dens and mini bonfires for sausage sizzling. Our own long section of river, with fishing and laundry rights, is safe to paddle in (obviously with parental consent). We also work with a range of experienced activity providers: Gill scrambling, climbing, Fell walking, photography, canoeing, kayaking, paragliding, fresh water swimming, meditation, yoga / Nidra yoga sessions & mindfulness training classes, willow weaving, candle, bread, calligraphy and felt making workshops…. the list actually does go on. If you let me know what you’re interested in, we can help organise a workshop leader for an hour or a few days. If you like, we can organise a totally unflappable private cook to be on hand to prepare a wonderful Brunch, have lunch ready for you after a morning Fell walk or prepare a special dinner where all you need to do is dress-up and come downstairs. We are also able to organise regular Housekeeping throughout your stay; beds made, bathrooms sparkling, floors hoovered and washing up done so the house is lovely when you return from a trip out.
