Happy roses require manure. Tomorrow's job. Rod from Lake View Farm brings us manure by the tractor bucket load and it's very good stuff.

A very wet day in the Lake District today! We climbed Lank Rigg, which was difficult with the stream in spate. We were thoroughly soaked to the skin by the time we got back to the car, but enjoyed a good soak in a hot bath back at Chestnut and a sleepy afternoon in front of the fire watching old films.

We visited Askham Hall Gardens for the first time today. It won't be the last. Great wood fired pizzas after walking round a really lovely and very quiet garden. Nice herbaceous borders and woodland gardens, great kitchen garden, lovely buildings and setting. Well worth a visit.

It's hollyhock season at Chestnut. Beautiful delicate flowers but the plants are tough, self sown survivalists and are really enjoying the hot dry weather.

We arrived last night to this riot of roses and self seeded annuals. It's our 25th wedding anniversary (I never promised her a rose garden).

We finally got round to putting some hanging space in the small bedroom. It may be the smallest bedroom but it has the best view from the bed.

After a couple of very warm days, the roses have started to bloom. Gertrude Jekyll and Desdemona were first but the others are not far behind.

Following the patio work, anything that couldn't run away got concreted. The front step no longer wobbles and the little broken wall is fixed.

A male wren is building this nest in the porch at Chestnut. He's hard at work but occasionally stops to advertise his real estate to the local lady wrens.
