The gorgeous pinks of the Aurora Borealis over us at Lamacraft and Start Bay near Start Point in South Devon this week simply stunning! 💗

We were looking for shooting stars and then we realised after we’d taken the photos and got back home how pink the sky was! 😲

Had no idea when I took these that the aurora borealis was predicted to be visible over the UK last night!

We saw lots of shooting stars 🌠 from the Meteor Shower and I was trying to capture those, but was thrilled when I saw how these had come out and read this morning that it was visible! 🌌

The skies are so clear here and so it’s perfect for star spotting! ⭐️

Just spotted this across the water from us!

Nautica is anchored off the castles today - we were planning to bring her inside, but the timings for her tours on the steam trains and riverboats didn't quite add up so we took advantage of the unusually good conditions offshore today to make sure her passengers got to explore South Devon, as well as spending time in Dartmouth.

Fascinating map 🗺️ of shipwrecks along our coastline so many near Start Point too! ⚓️

Did you know…that our stretch of coast is a veritable ship’s graveyard? This map (picture) was produced by the fabulous ‘Start Point Project’ in 2016 led by Steve Clarkson and supported by the BSAC Jubilee Trust. This updated wreck map was produced for display at Start Point Lighthouse to give visitors a better understanding of why this stretch of coastline was so dangerous.

It still is. Each year we assist numerous vessels who have found themselves in trouble either rounding Start Point or Prawle Point. Wind against tide can be fierce here and if you don’t know the waters and know when to go far out and when to stay close in you can find yourself in trouble, even with today's sophisticated kit on board. NCI is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a 2,000+ mile journey for a specially designed embroidered flag bearing the names of all 60 NCI stations. The flag is now in Cornwall on its way to us – you can follow the progress of the flag can at https://share.garmin.com/share/NCI30SupportedBySirius using the password NCI30. It arrives from Rame Head on July 8 where it will be flown from our flagstaff and then on July 9, courtesy of colleagues at Britannia Royal Naval College heads off to Froward Point NCI.
