Continuing our tour of the cottages, we head to East View, a former schoolhouse. East View has arguably the best views out of all our cottages straight down the valley.

This cottage sleeps 2 in an open plan style, with a separate bathroom providing both a shower and bath. There’s a log burner and plenty of space for you (and your furry friends) to relax.

With a fully equipped kitchen and large dining space, you’ve got all you need to escape the everyday for a while. Just along the road there is the new Farndale Store and within a few miles there’s a variety of pubs and eateries to choose from.

We might be a little bit biased, but we think the rolling hills and valleys of North Yorkshire are the best countryside and the best county!

Yorkshire has everything to offer from the coast to the moors, cities to dales. It’s such a great place to visit or live.

We adore the Rhubarb Rhubarb hand wash! There is also their new fragrance, Greenhouse, in the bathrooms.

Working with old and listed buildings takes a lot of time and love.

Over the last couple of weeks West View’s gable end has been raked out by hand and repointed with lime. Protecting the building, keeping traditional skills employed in the area and maintaining its beautiful appearance.

We have availability in some of our cottages at Church Houses to either arrive or depart that day, or stay for the week. You won’t have to worry about where to park or need to pack your kit up for the day, you can just wander over whenever you’re ready. Perfect

Next up in our tour of the cottages is The Cottage. One of our more recent refurbishments, carried out in 2020, this bright and cheerful detached cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms, both of which are ensuite.

Downstairs there is a cosy lounge with cast iron range, incorporating a log burner to curl up by and enjoy the views. Through in the kitchen there is a spacious dining area, with farmhouse table and access to the garden. There is a dishwasher, fridge and separate freezer, washer dryer, oven, hob and microwave - everything you need for a home from home stay.

To the front of the cottage there is your own drive, with space for 2 cars. Whilst to the side and rear of the cottage, the garden is really settling in now, with roses, hydrangeas and more, as well as the wild flower area to the front.

The Cottage is a firm favourite with many of our guests - and we can see why!

Did you know that as well as the daffodils, Farndale is also famous for this tiny music venue - The Band Room. Situated at Low Mill, it is within walking distance of any of our cottages (along the daffy path from Church Houses).

With a capacity of just 100, it makes for a very atmospheric experience. Names such as Cerys Matthews, Howe Gelb and W***y Mason have played there - it’s a very special place. Imagine going to such a small personal gig and then heading outside in a dark sky reserve to wander home under thousands of stars…✨

To introduce ourselves to our new followers, and for those of you who have stayed with us before too….
We thought we’d do a run through of each of our cottages.

Which is your favourite?

First up we have West View - a listed farmhouse - one of the first cottages renovated at Church Houses. Sleeping 6 people in 3 bedrooms, there are 2 spacious bathrooms with roll-top baths and separate showers. The house is full of original features, from the large kitchen which retains the range, to the troughs in the bathroom and the Yorkshire sash windows. Now boasting all you need for a fantastic self catering holiday, there’s an electric oven and hob in the fully equipped kitchen and a log burner in the lounge.

Rievaulx Abbey
Just outside of Helmsley this beautiful English Heritage site is a great place to visit and enjoy the majesty and peacefulness.

Nestled in the very pretty village of Rievaulx, just a couple of miles by road from Helmsley, there is a car park, visitor centre, toilets and a cafe. Dogs are welcome.

Alternatively there is a 2.5mile walk from Helmsley Castle (also an English Heritage site), so you could park there, walk along, have lunch in the cafe or a picnic next to the Abbey, and wander back.

Booking in advance on their website will get you a discount - currently 10% - but you can just pay on arrival.

What a beautiful spring day today.

We went for a little wander along the daffodil walk, along the River Dove. The warmer weather last week has woken the daffs up and they’re looking glorious in the sun. So nice to see their heads bobbing in the breeze for the next couple of weeks. Spring is finally here.

Daffodil season is so very nearly here!

Farndale is famous for its daffodils. They come out a little later than planted bulbs elsewhere. The snow last week might have slowed them a little, but the warmer weather this week seems to be waking them up. Next week we should be starting to see that beautiful yellow glow all through the Dale.

This is a lovely little walk, up the road from the cottages at Church Houses to the Church, through the church yard, over the stream, through the field and back out on to the road. You can then choose to turn back down the hill to the cottages, or carry on uphill for a longer walk. The churchyard will soon be a sea of yellow.

Tea and cake are served in the church on Thursdays from 23rd March to 13th April, 11am until 4pm

We have some last minute availability in a couple of our cottages over the next few weeks. Come and see the beautiful daffodils for yourselves. They really are an amazing sight.
