We've been watching the Nuthatches nesting in a box intended for Sparrow's the past few weeks & recently feeding young, thinking they must be ready to fledge, yesterday they did, 7 of them, we didn't see the first but did see the others fledge.

An email from yesterday from guests who stayed a couple of weeks ago & previously in 2022

Hi Steve and Karen.
Sorry it has taken so long to get round to writing to you.

Janet, Rowan, Adam and I just wanted to thank you for a lovely stay a couple of weeks ago. Although the weather did not really play ball, it gave us the opportunity to just relax around the cottage a bit more. It is ever so relaxing watching the birds/squirrel from the landing, and you can spend hours there without even realising.

We went home feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world......although wishing we didn't have to, and could have stayed longer at Sandbed. :-)

Turf wars go on at Sandbed cottage!
Two red squirrels chasing around our Sycamore tree this morning & Nuthatch's & House Sparrow's fighting over a nest box.

Bit of a wet & wild walk today from Kirkby Stephen to home via Waitby, Smardale & Ravenstonedale.
Images, 2 railway workers cottages, probably not lived in since the 1960's
Double lime kiln recently restored, Smardale viaduct on the Stockton and Darlington railway used to carry mostly coal from the North East to the main line @ Tebay.

An interesting walk today up the Tees river from Barny (Barnard Castle) to Clotherdale, images of the remains of the viaduct carrying the Darlington and Stockton branch line over the Tees then onto Stainmore & Tebay. Views also of the Castle & Bowes museum.

Out walking yesterday, from Ash fell, over Smardale fell and back via Wharton to the Tommy road.
Living in such an over populated country, I'm never ceased to be amazed by how easy it is to find peace and solitude so close to home.
