Stay and Walk at Whitehouse Farm

Stay and Walk at Whitehouse Farm Two sustainably run and welcoming holiday cottages Wherever possible we have tried to use green principles to furnish and run the cottages.

Located high on a moor overlooking theRoaches and Tittesworth Reservoir, our two Whitehouse Barn Cottages have one of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Staffordshire Moorlands. Very different in style, Hen Cottage and Cloud Loft each offer a cosy retreat after a day's exploring: inside, there are wood burning stoves, comfy furnishings and fascinating features; outside there are dramat

ic views, the songs of skylarks and curlews and the occasional sighting of a hare in the fields below. The heating and hot water are largely provided by a wood-fired boiler the interiors are decorated using eco-paint and all guests are greeted with a welcome pack of local produce including home-made bread and eggs from our very free range hens. Whitehouse Barn Cottages are ideally situated to explore the western Peak District, Staffordshire Moorlands and East Cheshire. Major attractions such as Chatsworth, Alton Towers and Jodrell Bank are within 40 minutes drive away and there are many other quieter places to discover. And our cottages are perfect for those who enjoy walking, cycling, climbing, horse-riding or the many other outdoor activities available all around us. We look forward to welcoming you, and sharing this very special place with you.

Another visit to Jodrell Bank. Just 40 mins from us and well worth a visit.
Could be combined with a visit to Gawsworth/ Capesthorn Halls or Tatton Park.
Jodrel Bank is an easy and fascinating introduction to radio astronomy.
Excellent displays and cafe/s - best for coffee and cake. We took a picnic, which we had at the edge of Bernard Lovell's arboretum. There is a lovely picnic sourcing shop at Twemlow Green.

And after Tissington, Weaver and I went for a lovely walk around Osmaston Estate. Another model of a timeless English village. The pub at nearby Shirley is meant to be good. A lovely track joins the two villages via the lake and the watermill.

Tissington is almost too pretty. It is timeless, with its Hall, quaint cottages, tea room, duck pond butchers, candle shop and church. It is the kind of place Miss Marple would live, working in the garden watching village life.
And talking gardens , the reason I go there is to visit the nursery. All the plants are tenderly managed and grown in peat free compost. They don't have a wide selection but there is depth. they have c 30 different types of Salvias and s lovely collection of Burnetts (sangisorbas). It is one of those places that just make you feel better.

The garden doesn't come into its own til June. It's also looking a bit scrappy as I've cleared two borders. But today this group of periscaria and centaurea has made me hopeful of the summer to come. And my first ever proper Wisteria raceme. Only taken 16 years.

Definitely Spring in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Perfect for exploring the paths linking the lovely villages of Grindon and Butterton and a lunch in the beer garden of the multi award winning Black Lion pub at Butterton. The Ash trees aren't in leaf yet so the landscape is punctuated by skeleton trees. Didn't see any oak.
Ash before oak in for a summer soak
Oak before Ash in for a splash.
Hope the oaks get a move on.....
