This is Margaret, and she's truly incredible. As well as being a volunteer ranger, she gets involved in lots of other things. A couple of years ago Margaret helped us uncover the history of our place, providing fascinating information about the landscape and animals from the zoo at The Roaches that once lived in the building and grazed the land. She really is an amazing octogenarian!

Margaret Black, who has been volunteering for almost 30 years, cleans signs, picks litter and trims shrubs.

An exciting new community Christmas tradition is happening in Leek. Join us and fill your December with joy and wonder!

This Christmas, community groups, schools, artists, organisations and businesses are co-creating a Live Advent Calendar in Leek, and everyone is invited to be part of this special event.

Every morning in December on the run up to Christmas Day, we'll reveal the door and its location on the OUTSIDE website, Facebook and Instagram. If you can find the real door in the town, and open it between 4pm and 7pm*, you will be treated to a surprising festive moment!

Singers and storytellers, dancers and drummers, theatrical experiences and twinkly light trails, who knows what magic you might find...

If you can't make it along in person each day, there will be a digital version of the calendar where you can find out what's behind each door.

Let's make this December truly magical in Leek!

Keep your eyes peeled. We've spotted red deer here on the back of The Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks, and often over on Gun Moor🦌

If you visit the woods you can’t help notice the red deer are really vocal at the moment as they bellow across both and . With these loud bellows the males are claiming their territories and challenging each other, to lock antlers and fight over the females, during the autumn rut. Red deer are the UK’s largest deer and the males have large, very strong antlers, which incredibly they shed each year and then regrown, a few weeks later. Even though many antlers are shed, you’ll only occasionally find them, as they form a nutritious treat for rodents and other mammals keen to eat this rich source of calcium. Photo by Ben Andrew.
