Celebrating national dog day with this lovely photo Darryl took of Angus last year at the shoot.

We have 2 beautiful cottages that are dog friendly with 15 acres of secure fields and woods for your best friend to enjoy. They will love the space to run, woods to explore and pond to swim in.

Dog friendly is often a term used but they still restrict dogs in their lets. We don’t do that, if your dog normally sleeps in your room that’s fine just bring your own linen. If your dog wants to chill on sofa with you, also fine, just use the throws available.

Recently took a trip out to wonderful Portmeirion after hearing lots about this place. It didn’t disappoint with the interesting colourful buildings and beautiful gardens set on the coast. Well worth a trip as it’s only 1 hr 30 away.

I stopped at Coed Y Brenin forest and Barmouth on the way and drove back through stunning Snowdonia scenery including Bettws Y Coed. It really is a beautiful area to call home.

As you can see I’m getting back into my first career as a photographer. I tried to capture the magical charm of this place and really enjoyed it. Thank you Darryl for pushing me to have another go after 15 years of not touching a camera!

My crop field has finally reached a stage where I can enjoy some walked up training. It’s the perfect height and thickness for hiding dummies, lots of flowers making it pretty to look at and also attracts all the wildlife too.

If you want to enjoy some walked up training ready for the shoot/trialling season book into our cottages and enjoy free access to the ground.

Meet the new picking up team at Mid Wales Holidays!

This year we have plenty of dogs to work at the local shoot at Plas Dinam 😊.

Grace is my top dog at age 7, very competent at her work and a wonderful pet to live with.

Harry 22 months old did a few days last year at the shoot and will be a regular this year. He was quick to learn the role last year and it was a real surprise how good he was!

Fern 14 months old and is Gracie’s daughter. From 4 months old she knew how to hunt for birds in my fields. She is now steady, delivers, handles and still hunts better than any dog I’ve owned. Very excited to start her on the shoot for the first time.

Jimmy is Fern’s brother and a very talented boy, with Gracie’s crazy drive to work and so much enthusiasm for life and so biddable too. He has suddenly grown up and turning into a wonderful Gundog that I hope will do me proud this season.

Ivy is Gracie and Harry’s daughter and will be learning the ropes at home for another year as she’s only 5 months old. But already showing huge potential in her training.

So blessed to have such amazing dogs 🥰.

If anyone is wondering why Rosie my Chihuahua is not in here it’s because she doesn’t do sit stays and needs her own post to introduce her 🤣. Then there is Angus who has now retired to my parents across the yard and is getting spoilt rotten 😊.

My guests asked if they could rent any paddle boards locally so I did one better than that and invited them to the Llyn Clywedog as my guests to enjoy a paddle whilst I used my Kayak. We had the whole lake to ourselves 😊

Guests staying here on our 5-day gundog training holiday recently asked for a list of recommended walks which they could do on their day off from training.

While I have previously covered trips to the beach, and how to prepare for hiking trips with your dog, I didn’t have a definitive guide to some of the incredible walks that are right on our doorstep.

Most of our guests do come with dogs, but these scenic summer walks would be just as perfect for families, couples and individuals on holiday here in Mid Wales.

From the serene woodlands of Hafren Forest to the dramatic landscapes of the Cambrian Mountains, there’s something for every dog and owner to enjoy. Always remember to keep your dog on a lead where necessary, respect the local wildlife and livestock, and carry enough water for both you and your pup.

A staycation can be a fantastic choice for indulging in hobbies, especially if you have lots of equipment to bring along.

Imagine you love photography, painting, playing an instrument, or cooking and baking - unless you’re driving to the south of France, packing up all your gear for a trip abroad is going to be pretty impossible. With a staycation, you can bring everything you need without worrying about travel restrictions or baggage limits.

For photographers and artists, Mid Wales offers stunning landscapes, picturesque villages, and beautiful wildlife. You can spend your days capturing breathtaking scenes or finding the perfect spot to set up your easel and paint. You don’t even have to leave our grounds. There are plenty of visible vistas on your doorstep or from your bedroom if you’re staying in Penrhyllan!

For those who love cooking and baking, our self-catering holiday cottages come with fully equipped kitchens. You can bring all your favourite gadgets and ingredients to create delicious meals and sweet and savoury treats, just like you would at home.

And if you have a gundog breed and enjoy training, Mid Wales Holidays has something extra special for you, too. You can book one-on-one gundog training sessions with me, your host, Collette May.

For more information please DM me or head to Completely Gundogs to take a look at our gundog training account.

If you are thinking about hosting dog training holidays or weekend workshops for your clients I would love to have you here.

Here at Mid Wales Holidays, you and your group will have exclusive use of our site.
This includes our outdoor training grounds, which features a mix of woodland, grassland and cover crop depending on the season.

Perfect for all dog sports from gundog training, to scentwork and mantrailing, you name it.

You and your group will have access to:
• One rough wood with dense cover and cleared tracks for handlers. Great for spaniels.
• One open wood with a wide, clear avenue through.
• Two height-adjustable log jumps into the open wood.
• Two grass fields with mown strips, reedy grass areas for hunting and undulation.
• One round jumping pen.
• One cover crop field.
• One medium size pond in the main field with gentle, sloped entry on one side. Fenced either side to discourage dogs running around.
• One small pond with island.
• Full and half-height stock fencing with barbed wire removed for jumping.
• One enclosed agricultural barn with water and electricity, and seating for 14.
• One open agricultural barn for sheltered training, or undercover parking.
• Toilet and shower block
• Starlink WiFi access in the holiday cottages, training barn and caravans

I can also provide you with gundog training equipment, indoor teaching facilities and basic catering amenities.

With options to suit a range of budgets (from a new barn conversion to camping) there is on-site self catering accommodation for up to 8 teachers and handlers.

If you want to bring a larger group, there are plenty of other tried and tested dog friendly accommodation options nearby too.

If you would like more information, including a breakdown of the grounds, accommodation and costs, please message me and I will send you a PDF guide.

08/07/2024

If you're thinking about a Friday to Sunday weekend getaway, a staycation in the UK can be so much easier and more relaxing.

Sure, flights to European cities might seem cheap, but there’s a lot more to consider.

First, you have to travel to the airport, which can take a while, especially with traffic or public transport delays. Then there's the time you spend at the airport - checking in, going through security, and waiting to board. After the flight, you still have to collect your bags and possibly deal with customs. All this can eat up a lot of your weekend.

If you finish work on a Friday and have to go through all this, it might be quite late by the time you reach your destination. And on Sunday, you'll need to head back early enough to deal with the same process in reverse so you’re ready for work on Monday. It can end up feeling rushed and exhausting rather than relaxing.

A staycation, on the other hand, is much simpler, especially if you choose somewhere fairly central and accessible, like Mid Wales.

It’s easy for many people to just hop in the car and get here without too much hassle. You can leave after work on Friday and be at your destination within a few hours. No need to deal with airports or long travel times. Plus, you can bring whatever you want with you without worrying about luggage limits.

By staying in the UK, you can maximise your time away. You’ll have more of Friday evening to relax, a full day on Saturday, and plenty of time on Sunday before heading home. This way, you can enjoy a proper break and feel refreshed, all without having to take any time off work. It’s a great way to make the most of a weekend!

If you're an experienced group of gundog training friends or trialers, we'd love to host you here at Mid Wales Holidays.

Our ground has been selected as a venue for both spaniel and retriever working tests and provides ample opportunities to test dogs of all abilities.

There is also the option to hire our equipment, e.g. dummy launchers, bang box, ball dropper etc.

Depending on dates, I can set up drills and scenarios, put blinds out and throw marks so you'll all get to enjoy training.

There is also the potential to use my off-site training grounds which include much more challenging mountain terrain which used as part of a large commercial shoot during the season.

The on-site self-catering accommodation will take 8-14 people. If you want to bring a larger group, there are plenty of other tried and tested dog-friendly accommodation options nearby too.

Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and book your dates.

In the UK, employers have to give employees a minimum of 28 days of holiday each year. This includes public holidays, but some employers might offer more than that.

If you're self-employed, it's a bit different. You don’t get holiday pay because you're your own boss. You have to fit your time off around your work, which can be tricky since no work means no income.

If you already work from home or have a job that offers flexible remote working, and you want to escape the daily routine, then a staycation is a perfect opportunity to get a change of scenery without dipping into your limited holiday allowance or negatively impacting your business turnover.

At Mid Wales Holidays, we have installed Starlink recently. This means that even though we are in a remote and tranquil setting, surrounded by countryside, rolling hills and valley views, the holiday cottages (even the barn and caravan) have access to reliable, fast internet speeds.

You can work remotely during the day and then dip into holiday mode in the evenings. The longer summer days mean there is plenty of time to enjoy our private dog training grounds, get some much needed downtime and discover new places nearby, all wile keeping up with your work. It’s the perfect work-life balance between taking a break and staying productive.

The dates might not work for you, your dog might not work well in a group, or you might not want to do three full days of training.

For those who want to train here on our grounds, I always offer guests the chance to book 121 training sessions during their stay.

We can focus the sessions on troubleshooting a specific problem you're having, or I can help you push your training on by setting up some scenarios and exercises using the amazing facilities we have here.

With a one-to-one you will receive an hour’s in person tuition.

A one-to-one is a great option if…
・You want to train with us while you are staying with Mid Wales Holidays.
・You have a busy schedule and want to be able to book your session when it suits you.
・Your dog is not comfortable around other dogs and would therefore struggle on one of our gundog holidays.
・Your dog is working at a grade 1 / grade 2 level and isn't ready for one of our gundog training holidays.
・You have specific needs and goals that you want to focus on that might not get covered on a training holiday.
・You want to join one of our gundog training holidays but are unsure if your dog is ready, I can assess you and your dog and help suggest the best options.
・You just need a reminder of exercises covered on a previous holiday you attended.

If you have a birthday or special occasion coming up too, a one-to-one training session makes a great gift for somebody who loves training.

If you've been thinking about booking a stay and train experience now is the perfect time.

While training can be easily added to your booking via the website, if you know you want to do some training during your stay, please message me before booking so I can make sure I am around and available.

What’s your favourite season to visit Mid Wales?

Do you love the long days and outdoor adventures of summer or the dark nights and cosy charm of winter?

24/06/2024

Taking a dog abroad can be a challenge. If you live in the UK, you will need to talk to your vet to make sure your microchip can be read internationally. Your dog will also need to have had a rabies vaccination, an in-date pet passport, and a valid Animal Health Certificate from your vet.

Each country also has its own entry requirements, and some destinations might require your dog to have extra vaccinations, blood tests, or even be placed in quarantine.

While all of this is possible, it can seem like a lot of work and added expense for a week or two away.

This is why most people end up putting their pets in kennels or boarding facilities when they go on holiday. Some might have friends or family look after them, but that’s not always an option.

For our dogs, though, this is certainly not a holiday. Kennels can be pretty stressful even for resilient dogs, especially if they’re not used to being away from you or their home or around strange people and other dogs all the time.

That’s why staycations remain the best holiday option for dog owners. You get to enjoy your time away, relaxing and exploring, without leaving your dog behind.

There is no need to deal with the logistics of kennels, and you won’t spend your holiday worrying about whether or not your pup is getting the care it needs.

Plus, your dog gets to be part of the fun. You can find dog-friendly activities (like gundog training) and places to visit, making it a real memory-making vacation for both of you. It’s just so much more relaxing knowing your dog is right there with you, enjoying the time together.

Staycations in the UK were all we could talk about a few years ago. And for good reason too - with the COVID-related travel restrictions and quarantine rules there wasn’t really much choice when it came to booking a holiday.

Now that things are back to normal, it feels like staycations have fallen off the radar. People are eager to travel far and wide again. After being stuck at home for so long, there’s this huge desire to get back to exploring new places and cultures.

Adverts on social media are always popping up with alluring exotic destinations, making us believe that we need to be holding a cocktail on a remote white-sand beach to fully relax.

But we don’t always need to travel far, or abroad, to have a good time and escape the daily grind. A sense of inner peace and calm, along with awesome experiences, can be found much, much closer to home. Like right here in Mid Wales.

So, if you are planning your next trip, check out this month's blog to find out why a staycation with your dog is still the best holiday idea, whether you are looking for a romantic couples retreat, an active adventure, or a family-friendly getaway.
