What’s hot in travel next year? Condé Nast Traveller UK recently revealed their ‘Best places to go to in the world 2024’ which included one of our longstanding clients, Tourism Sri Lanka! They say reasons to visit South and Central Sri Lanka include wellness retreats, a new food festival and a nearly 200-mile nature trail.

We would add, unique gastronomy, welcoming people, stunning coastline, tea-trails, the Galle Literary Festival and it's the only place in the world to watch the two biggest mammals on land and in the sea (elephants and whales). Sri Lanka is back on the tourist map, welcoming 1.5m visitors in 2023.

Also on the list is French Polynesia, New Zealand's South Island and The Kimberley's and Northern Rivers in Australia. Anyone travelling to these places in 2024 could tag on a visit to Samoa Tourism, another of our longstanding clients! Samoa is an idyllic, authentic Polynesian Pacific Island destination, less then four hours from Auckland, New Zealand and five hours from Sydney and Brisbane in Australia. A few days relaxing on Samoa's islands is a great way to end a trip to the Southern Hemisphere!

The report highlights Sri Lanka’s ambitious targets for green tourism. The Hon. Harin Fernando said: “We will see Sri Lanka positioning ourselves as one of the first fully green tourism destinations.”

Sri Lanka genuinely appreciated speaking to the BBC. The impact an interview with the BBC can have on a destination is huge given its profile around the world as a trusted broadcaster.

The BBC’s support is invaluable as Sri Lanka concentrates on tourism recovery following its challenges in recent years and looks to boost its visitor numbers to five million tourists by 2030. Is Sri Lanka on your bucket list next year?

The first transatlantic flight by a large passenger plane powered only by alternative fuels took off today. Operated by Virgin Atlantic, it flew from London's Heathrow to New York's JFK airport. Airlines see the flight, which is supported by government funding, as demonstrating that a greener way of flying is possible.

This is a big step forward to making air travel cleaner, however there are challenges ahead such as fuel supply issues. Nevertheless, the UK government plans to require 10% of aviation fuel to be sustainable by 2030.

Sustainability took centre stage for our client, the Region of Valencia in 2024 at this year's World Travel Market - WTM London.

In a landmark move the region has committed to joining the World Tourism Organisation and will adhere to its Global Code of Ethics for Tourism (GCET). This strategic commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism represents a significant step toward preserving the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Managing tourism is imperative to the region as visitor figures rise in 2023.

Ms Nuria Montes, the newly elected Minister of Innovation, Industry, Commerce & Tourism for the Region of Valencia spoke at both a press breakfast and press conference at WTM. Elected in the recent elections Ms Montes is from the private sector. Her first initiative in the post was to announce that the region will not be adopting a Tourist Tax on 01 January as planned by the previous administration and that this law has been repealed.

The latest data shows that the number of British visitors to the Valencia region in July 2023 topped 1,438,565, up by 16.5% in 2022. In 2022 the region received around 2.2 million British visitors, which is just over 14% of the total number of British visitors to Spain and was the fourth most visited area in Spain by Brits, after the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Andalucia. The region aims to capitalise on these positive visitor figures in 2024 and beyond, in its promotions and activities in the UK market.

At World Travel Market - WTM London this year we were delighted to work with the Region of Valencia organising two press events – a stand press conference on Monday and a press breakfast at Tapa Tapa on Tuesday – along with media interviews for the new Minister of Innovation, Industry, Commerce & Tourism for the region, Ms Nuria Montes.

Both were a huge success with 25 quality media from trade and consumer attending both events. One of Ms Montes’ first initiatives in post was to announce that the region will not be adopting a Tourist Tax on 01 January as planned by the previous administration and that this law has been repealed.

The media at the press breakfast were delighted to witness the signing of a document that will be sent to the Spanish parliament repealing the law!
