HOW TO GET A FREE HOTEL STAY DURING YOUR LAYOVER 🏨

Some airlines only provide free hotel accommodations for passengers that have a layover between 8-12 hours or overnight. However, each airline is different, so be sure to check your carrier's website.

1️⃣Always confirm with the airline first before booking your ticket

2️⃣ Before making a flight booking, read the terms and conditions provided on the official airline website.

4️⃣ To get a free hotel stay, follow the airline’s instructions, as you may be able to do this through ‘manage bookings’ on the official airline website. Alternatively call the airline, give them your booking reference number and request for a free transit hotel stay.

‼️Note: it’s important to check with the airline if your passport is eligible for this. Depending on which passport you have, you may also have to pay for transit visa to leave the airport during your layover.

5️⃣A LIST AIRLINES THAT PROVIDE FREE HOTEL STAYS DURING LAYOVERS

1. Air China
2. Emirates Airlines
3. Ethiopian Airlines
4. Etihad Airlines
5. Gulf Air
6. SriLankan Airlines
7. Royal Jordanian
8. Qatar Airways
9. Turkish Airlines
10. Royal Air Maroc
11. Egypt Air

I’ve done this with Egypt air, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish airlines and Air China in the past.

It’s also a great way to explore another city before you get to your final destination.

I’ve had the most wholesome conversations with black women this week who recently returned from their first solo trip!

You could see the glow in their eyes as they shared their stories and said it was one of the best decisions they made for themselves!

So happy for them! It gave me so much joy hearing about their trips 💛🥺

If you’re on the fence about solo travelling, here’s 5 reasons why you should give it a try:

1️⃣ it’s a great way to spend time with yourself and opportunity to connect with yourself in a new way.

2️⃣ You learn to trust yourself and your instincts. Solo travelling gives you the confidence in yourself and helps build self-trust.

3️⃣ Solo travelling is empowering! You learn so much about yourself! It’s personally made me a more adaptable, resilient person that is not afraid to embrace change.

4️⃣ You get to learn so much about different cultures and people. Being out of your comfort zone encourages you to use parts of your mind and emotional center that you don’t usually use. It asks you to do things that you are a little uncomfortable doing, such as talking to strangers, making new friends,  or asking for help; sitting to eat alone or going to a show/concert by yourself. Travelling opens your mind.

5️⃣ Solo travelling is great for your mental health and wellbeing like grounding yourself at the beach or in nature. You also learn self soothing skills.

When I talk to people about solo travelling l literally get so emotional because it has been impactful and life changing for me and I want more women to experience this themselves and see the world 🌍

If you’ve solo travelled what has solo travelling taught you about yourself?

𝗔 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗜𝗬 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝗼𝘆

When you think of DIY you may be thinking bob the builder, arts and crafts 😂

A friend asked me what does DIY With Joy mean and realised I haven’t properly shared on feed what DIY WIth Joy stands for.

The actual meaning:

𝗗𝗜𝗬 (Do it yourself) 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗷𝗼𝘆 (noun – a feeling of great pleasure and happiness).

I know most of you call me Joy 😂 but the ‘Joy’ part of my brand name is also a play on my first name which is Joyce! ✨

🌴DIY With Joy is about empowering you to travel smart, travel deeper and experience food cultures globally.

🌴DIY With Joy is more than just a travel and food blog, it’s a community and a resource for people who seek to dive deeper into their travel experiences. This platform is dedicated to providing you with everything you need to plan your trip, including solo travel guides, destination travel guides, food travel experiences, tips, and meaningful travel stories.

✨My mission - to inspire and encourage others to find joy in solo travel, savour new flavours, and appreciate life’s simple pleasures. I hope to bring some adventure, joy and inspiration into people’s lives.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have some truly incredible experiences exploring new countries on my own. For me, travel is a way to immerse myself in different cultures, challenge my assumptions, open my mind to new possibilities, and experience beautiful landscapes. But more than anything else, it’s about connecting with people.

Travel isn't just an escape; it's a profound way to enrich our lives, broaden our minds, and unite us globally. I’ve also love experiencing food culture. Food is more than eating, it’s a universal experience that also connects us.

Connecting beyond borders is travelling and exploring food cultures 🌍

You can find more of the good stuff on my blog, Diywithjoy.com and subscribe to my bi-weekly newsletter where I share paid food & travel opportunities & creator tips and much more! 💛

Here’s a photo dump of se of my favourite photos:

1. Beautiful boutique hotel in Tunisia. 🇹🇳
2. Baby elephants strolling back into their habitat in Nairobi. 🇰🇪

, a leading publisher in the educational books for the public and private school systems in Brazil reached out to me about featuring my blog article ‘The Influence Of Nigerian Cuisine In Brazil – From Birth To Pain, To Freedom’ in a book named Peacemakers - 7º ano, to enrich the content of material.

When I first saw the email I thought it was a scam loool. 😂 But after my research and the editor being very serious, I realised it was legit and accepted the deal.

I created a video after having a dream about Brazil and my love for Akara (a Nigerian fritter made from bean flour). I remember that day my brain wouldn’t rest and went into hyper-focus mode to research further the deep relationship further between Nigeria and Brazil. 🇳🇬🇧🇷 I also used this video as part of my entry for a creator grant and was granted $1000 by 💛

I wanted to share the story of the influence of my rich Nigerian food culture and Yoruba roots in Brazil so I repurposed the video into a blog article.

Brazil has the largest population of Black people outside of Africa. I remember my Brazilian friend telling me this and saying they don’t really teach much African history/Afro-Brazilian history is schools which was mind blowing to me 😮

Knowing my blog would be read my millions of children around Brazil, especially Afro Brazilians learning a small part of their history through food was really powerful to me because matter and they deserve to be told! It’s pretty cool to me too!

This is your sign to act on your dreams and listen to your intuition.

NEW POST: A First-Timer’s Guide to Attending Afronation, Portugal 🇵🇹

If you’re thinking of going to Afronation Portugal 2024 - Solo Trip 2024, this guide is for you ⬇️

Tips and advice for someone going to Afronation for the first time

I’ve travelled to over 17 countries alone and had so many travel moments that’s altered the way I think.
Solo travel can be one of the most liberating and empowering experiences of your lifetime. It allows you to explore new places, cultures, and people on your own terms, while also gaining confidence and independence. It has been one of the most freeing things for me.

If you’re thinking of travelling for the first time solo and don’t know what where to start, here’s some times for you ⤵️

1️⃣ Research and plan ahead. The internet is your best friend. Use resources like YouTube vlogs, blog posts, Pinterest and even Instagram.

2️⃣Don’t be afraid of your own company. It’s kind of like going to the cinema alone or eating dinner alone. I feel like solo travel helps with self awareness. You learn so much about yourself.

3️⃣Safety - I know this is usually a big thing that puts people off solo travel. One of the things I do often is keep in contact with my family, facetime them etc. I also just pray and always follow my instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from that situation. Nonetheless a couple of countries I’ve been too, I felt super safe and welcomed. Depends on what country you plan on travelling to but be aware of pickpocketing and scams. If you research beforehand, you’ll be fine.

4️⃣Try and learn a couple of useful words in the language. This is very helpful especially when communicating with locals.

5️⃣Photos - You can bring a tripod with you and take pictures of yourself with a self timer or remote. Ask random strangers and direct them in how to take the shot you want. My top tips is asking someone with a dslr camera or offer to take pictures for a couple/family and politely ask them to take pictures of you in return. Additionally, you could ask hotel staff or your tour guide.

6️⃣Most importantly, enjoy every moment!

If you’ve travelled solo, share a tip or advice for someone below 💛

Ps, you can find more solo travel guides, safety tips, advice & more on my blog (link in bio) ✨
