The General Stores, Mill End, Mitcheldean. Always a mix of residential and commerce, though I’m not sure how far back! Much of the property is , built 600 years ago. The junction of Mill End and Mitcheldean High Street was once a thriving crossroads in the middle of a bustling town and there are some amazing photos of a ‘vagabond’ in Mitcheldean, along w sheep gathering outside shops. I will try and look them out.

The timber frame of the front features a which was the ancient way of working out structure and loads required of the timber structure and beams.

The frontage runs along Mill End itself, on the way out of the village. The large windows are from when it was the village shop. The arch under the window, from when it was a pub. It has been a bakery too, and features two bread ovens, still intact, one which had been bricked in.

But inside and round the back is where the magic starts. beams exposed in the dining area in the barn (used for rifle practice in the war) and a garden round the back create fabulous social spaces. And the private courtyard garden has a Mediterranean feel to it.

We feel privileged to have owned and lived in it for 20 years and are happy to let out parts of it on weekends.

Come and be surrounded by history and steeped in the resonance of wood to spend a weekend with friends and family.

Review just received for Mill End Mitcheldean

"Now I’m home & caught up on sleep thought I’d send an email.

The house is amazing! I’ve never stayed at a house that is so well equipped, the three dishwashers were a game changer. Thank you so much - everyone loved it - the hen especially - and lots of people have taken the details for future events".

I just bought these to provide shade from the sun in our studio and in our courtyard. I wish I still have the patience and skill to make clothes out of them - they remind me of crinolines. The stitchwork is amazing.

Standing on the steps to catch the early morning rays. Did you know Mill End is ? It has a stone wall surrounding the garden, so no escapees. A secure dog walking field in the village. And acres and acres of woodland all around for those dogs with good recall to run.

Cocktail hour for a fine summer evening. Mill End has a cocktail bar, complete with wall optics for premium spirits, bar equipment and a selection of specialist books.

Our signature cocktail, back when we ran the floating media and music industry bar in Bristol, aboard a Dutch barge which we had converted ourselves, was a rose petal martini - with a rose petal float of course. Rose liqueur came from .

We were also the first bar outside London to sell vapourised alcohol, gaining us press as far afield as Japan and Australia!

A Mediterranean style buffet lunch by for - what a fabulous bunch of girls. Graze tables and Sangria on Friday evening, buffet lunch pre from then Aperol Spritz before a dinner of from Bristol’s own ciccioskitchen and some creamy chicken pasta dishes and a gluten free arriabata for the gals.

It was great fun chatting to the hens, sharing life stories, showing them the parts of General Stores and Jovial Colliers they hadn’t hired (our private parts of the house) and hugs all around before I left.

Just left where hosted an Italian themed party for . And the wonderful Martin from entertained the girls with a wine tasting of some fizz, some Italian wines and some of their own wines made at their vineyard, just over the border into Herefordshire. The atmosphere was just buzzing with fun and friendship. I love it when a weekend house party goes so well, guests love the house and ALL its quirks and creativity and staff surpass themselves with service and style. It was the first time we’d met the main man, but we’ll be inviting him back for sure.

Have you got that Friday feeling yet?! The sun is out and we hope you have something chilled waiting for when you get home.

One of our favourite things at Mill End is the range of food options, from the outdoor pizza oven to a choice of kitchens and with more equipment to choose from than you will ever need (but have just in case)!

After all, we think the best memories are created, and family bonds strengthened over a shared love for food at Mill End.

We can help add a bit of fun with arranged cookery classes, led by the talented chefs at Bo****lo Banquets, which are perfect for all ages and skill levels.

Some fabulous photos sent through from guests who celebrated a joint 30th this weekend, and who were blessed with enough to organise a on the village playing fields.

Whether you want to celebrate a 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th or 90th (yes - we’ve helped guests celebrate them all) we offer in house catering via and seating for up to 40.

But we have to remind guests planning a stay with us that we are in a village location, so are strictly a no outdoor music, DJ’s or decks house.

Conversely our village location gives immediate access to a secure dog walking field, woods, playing fields, a co-op for emergency purchases and late bottles of wine, a family run butcher, a pharmacy and a handful of takeaways.

The best of both worlds with a plethera of activities and attractions right on the doorstep as listed with

Mitcheldean is a village of differences. It is actually a small town as it boasts a tiny town hall, housing a collection of vintage photocopiers, showcasing the links Xerox has had with Mitcheldean over the years. Xerox moved to Mitcheldean pre-war and were making anti gunner searchlights I believe, and at one time provided employment for 5,500 people.

Now Mitcheldean has some beautiful ancient buildings - but as austerity and cuts under the Tories has meant the demise of listed building conservation officers, many of these buildings have been developed inappropriately or allowed to fall into rack and ruin. It is sad to see.

Not only is The General Stores a grade 11 Medieval listed building, but we oversee the Wilderness Charity, which provides housing for 2 Mitcheldean residents. There are still some buildings of notable, aesthetic worth. The church provides a visual focal point to the village, and this little community garden is beautiful, since Mitcheldean Parish Council gave it a makeover!

We are in a village location, and so always remind potential guests that we’re not a ‘music in the garden, banging party house’, but on the plus side, there is a late co-op, family run butcher, pharmacy and takeaways right on the doorstep.

Waiting for our lemon trees to fruit. They usually do really well and fill the green oak and glass timber frame garden room with a glorious fragrance when they flower. But I had to cut them brutally over the winter as they had some kind of blight on the leaves. Maybe they just need a rest this year.

And we were very pleased that we managed to save a bee from a spiders web yesterday. Its back legs were all tangled up with web but we managed to loosen it enough that it flew off valiantly. Sorry spider that we denied you of both your web and your tea….

Inspired by in Bristol and having the goegeous stay with us for 2 weeks while she painted the side of our bs3 home, I thought I’d share the Bristol artists featured at . The sailor boys were the toilet doors for the boys cubicles. The Shanhai Lil girls adorned the girls toilets. I think we were one of the first bars in Bristol to have toilets back in 2000 and we had sponsorship for to paint these and the wonderful dripping door for our members only bar on a boat.

The large red rose was painted by and must have been done in the mid 80’s when we were at together.

The luscious pastel roses are in the appropriately called Rose Room and are by Montpelier artist Nell Nile.

And the huge green and red man spanning the whole of the upper malt house seating 40 is a wonderful collab by and which was done 20 years ago for Mitcheldean carnival, concealing 2 tiny bunk bedrooms behind, just seen.

has August Bank holiday weekend free for some reason and is offering 4 nights for the price of 3 in school summer holidays.

What a place to have breakfast, while grabbing a few mid week days whilst marketing. Perdy the Podenco has had a great time digging for mice, on the lawn, so that is our next big job on the never ending ‘to do’ list.

The lawn has never been the same since we had a group with about 15 kids, mostly boys in studded football boots, who destroyed the lawn rather than go over to the village playing fields with their parents. Not the type of guests we like.

Fortunately most of our guests are wonderful, respect the grade 11 listed building and garden and LOVE all the textiles, art, tots, games, books, magazines and very well equipped kitchens and cocktail bar.

Mill End Mitcheldean. The building is actually called The General Stores as it was indeed the village shop for many, many years. It was also a bakery. And a pub called The Jovial Colliers. It is actually Medieval, is 3 buildings internally linked and the middle section was a Medieval Long Hall.

Apparently it was built by someone quite wealthy as the beams in the loft are decorative and have chamfered edges. They are slightly darkened from the open cooking fires which would have burned below and in one, you can see a daisy wheel and carpenters marks.

The daisy wheel was a method of early geometry/structural architecture as the overlapping daisy wheel and intersecting ‘petals’ determined the pattern on the front of the property and the dimensions of the beams used in the original timber frame. Amazing to think these timbers are more than 600 years old.

It also features ancient ‘bee skeps’ in the gable end of the wall. These would have been open arched alcoves, in which woven bee hives were kept, so that the bees could be smoked out from the inside, to collect the honey comb without being stung.

One day. Two table themes. Out at the crack of dawn cutting cow parsley from the grass verges. Such an underrated plant I feel.

One is a newish black and white look, to have medicine bottles, potion stirrers and pastry toads for a hen party coming up.

The second, a Christmas table for creative - to have an end of year sum-up, a new year planning session then dinner and a knees up. Vintage Dickens hard backs on the table, and for some reason, some metal cacti. They are green and add height to the table. The small red lights when wrapped round, made them look like so we abandoned that idea.

Always something creative and fun happening at Mill End, courtesy of and .

When you stay at Mill End en famille, and there are more than 25 of you, you can hire The Jovial Colliers too. It is the private part of the house we live in when here (most Mondays to Fridays - lucky us).
