Little Hanger
The self-catering apartment, Little Hanger, has been converted from the original coach house and stables of Hartshanger, an Edwardian villa set above the village of Porlock in the heart of the Exmoor National Park . We have two self-catering apartments and have lived here since 1996 with our dog called Rufus and the occasional deer and badger. The house is situated within grounds of

about 5 acres with lovely views over Porlock Bay towards Wales. In the spring and summer the mostly wooded hillside is ablaze with colour from bluebells, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, primroses and wild cyclamen. It is a peaceful place, with the only sounds being that of bird song, the surf on the beach below and the occasional call from a seagull, buzzard or sheep. It is the ideal place for those wanting to get away from it all and relax. We have an all-weather tennis court for the more energetic to use. We have racquets and balls for you to borrow so no excuses on that score! Little Hanger sleeps up to six guests in two double rooms and a twin room. The main double bedroom has sea views and an en-suite with power shower and the second one has a patio door to a juliette balcony. In the twin room, one bed can be removed to accommodate the cot. The main bathroom has a bath with an electric shower over it. There is a large walk in airing cupboard with hanging space to dry coats etc. The kitchen is fully fitted for at least six with a full sized electric oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. The kitchen opens on to the dining area and sitting room where there is a log burner, logs provided FOC. Patio door leads out to a small private garden with table and chairs and a barbeque area. From here you can enter the rest of the grounds and it is a short walk to the tennis court. Porlock is a living village 12 months of the year. There are two churches, C of E and Methodist and a medical practice. As for shops, we boast two small supermarkets, a butcher, cheese shop, pharmacy, hardware store, Post Office, two art galleries, antique shop, pet shop and ladies clothes, garage and numerous gift and sweet shops. For those who do not wish to cook there are at least ten places to eat, from breakfast to dinner in two pubs, various restaurants, tea rooms and hotels - at prices to suit all pockets. Porlock, situated “twixt moor and sea” is the ideal base for exploring the beautiful Exmoor National Park whether by foot, bike or car. Exmoor has something to offer everyone, from wild animals and birds, spectacular views, archaeology and vernacular architecture to steam trains, walks, rural museums and National Trust properties. All are within easy reach of Porlock. There is ample space for parking cars and it is safe as we are well off the road. High Hanger
The self-catering apartment, High Hanger, is on the top floor of Hartshanger and is approached up a flight of stone stairs to the entrance door. Another flight inside will take you up to this wonderful top floor penthouse. The views from the balcony and roof terrace stretch from Aberthawe on the coast of wales in the East to Swansea and the Mumbles in the West. Nash Point light is directly opposite. High Hanger sleeps 4 in a double, with a basin and a twin with a round window and views of the sea. There is a bathroom with a roll top bath, shower room with electric shower and a separate toilet. The kitchen has a fridge-freezer, full sized hob and large combination convection, grill and microwave oven. The sitting/dining area has an electric fire and seating with flat screen TV. The balcony room has a sliding patio doors onto the balcony which has a wall ladder up to the roof, with sunbeds. The old tack room in the stable yard under Little Hanger, has a washing machine and a tumble drier; airer to dry clothes; freezer; space to store your bikes or pushchair etc. Outside you will find a tap with short hose to wash the mud off your bicycles or dog. This laundry/store room is shared with Little Hanger our other self-catering apartment.

The large magenta rhododendron, which you can see from the southwest coastal path is in full flower. Looking magnificent and the bluebells, which you have to visit to see, are also bright and beautiful. The photos I take just do not do them justice.

The sun is shining and the wild cherry is in flower. Our garden is at it’s most beautiful in May and it is sad to report that we have no visitors in Little Hanger this month. The rhododendrons are coming into flower and the Spring cyclamen are looking amazing. In a week or so the bluebells will be in full flower.

Amazing, for a couple of hours this afternoon it actually stopped raining! The blossom near the house is in full flower and the sun is shining on Porlock. I have never seen so many Spring Cyclamen flowering before - way more than the Autumn ones. April and May are the very best months to see this garden.

The sun is out, the sky is blue and I thought I would take some photos of this years wonderful flowers in the garden. The wisteria has never been so brilliant and I managed 2 pictures before my camera battery went dead! Typical. Now if I can just find the charging lead.......

After a lot of work by Phil Farmer's lads, Alistair and MIke the bluebells have been freed. The same same cannot be said for the path! A lot more work needed to remove the stump and all the roots of the cherry tree. As for all the other trees........

These are some of the trees up the garden above the cherry tree.

The last few weeks have been rather a disaster for our garden. Before Christmas we had two large trees down in Storm Arwin, then two more after, one which severed our phone line! Then last Friday 4 more trees. The one in these pictures is a large cherry lying accross a path pining our electric cable to the ground. The cherry was brought down by two Oaks falling on it from above.
