🫐🫐🫐

The Whortleberry has been harvested on Exmoor for centuries and is a popular wild fruit. It makes delicious jams and is tasty in fruit pies. It is also a medicinal plant with many health benefits. The Exmoor whortleberry is also known as the bilberry or wild blueberry, Whortleberry is its West Country name and it comes with a west country pronunciation too. Picking “werts” demands a lot of patience and a sharp eye as they are small and low growing shrubs. Dunkery Beacon, north hill and Porlock Hill are a few areas where you may find them growing and now is a great time to pick them. They are commonly found in heathlands and moorlands and the Parsonage has some private moorland where they grow that our guests can explore and are welcome to pick some. Paivi has been busy with Nathaniel today picking these sweet and juicy fruits and has made a yummy homemade pie, perfect with cream and a Miles west country tea. Picking them is a great experience and they taste much better when picked straight from the bush. There are many tea rooms and local shops near us that sell the local jams and use it for there traditional cream teas. One question remains for the cream tea though!! Jam or cream first??

Exmoor is home to some beautiful bridges in many styles, shapes and sizes. I enjoy visiting and photographing bridges of any kind and am somewhat of a bridge enthusiast. There is even a word for bridge lovers like me ‘pontist’. If you’re a fellow pontist the parsonage is a great base to explore some of these and to discover more.

Exmoor is known for inspiring the imagination and the pathways near us weave through many stories and are full of folklore. One of which is the lesser known Sisters fountain that is Situated just a couple of miles from the parsonage farm and can be accessed from county gate on the Somerset Devon border. Many people miss this lovely spring and well head when walking the coast path from Porlock to Lynton. The spring is in the middle of nowhere and is very isolated so it’s not surprising its often missed. If you’re walking the coast path keep an eye out for it or just enjoy an adventure to this mystical place surrounded in history. It is a hidden sanctuary deep in the wooded slopes along Exmoor’s famous coastline and has a remarkable legend attached to it, according to folklore, Joseph of Arimathea landed on the beach below with his nephew Jesus on their voyage to Glastonbury. The pair were thirsty after the steep climb, so Joseph struck his staff on the ground and water gushed forth. Sisters fountain has connections to Cornwall and Glastonbury. It is a very steep climb down to the spring but well worth a visit. It is an even steeper descent if you fancy visiting Glenthorne beach far below. Glenthorne Beach Is formed of mainly rocks and pebbles and a few small caves, it was once part of a country estate and is set at the bottom of high wooded cliffs, there is a small waterfall, a ruined boathouse, an ice house and two old lime kilns. You can just get a glimpse of the enchanting Glenthorne House which is set back in the Dramatic cliffside, it was built in the1830’s and is rich in literary heritage. We feel blessed living here and are lucky that we have so many places of interest on our doorstep for our guests to enjoy and the parsonage is a perfect base to explore these. It was in a remote farmhouse a little east of Sisters’ Fountain that Samuel Taylor Coleridge fell into an opium-induced reverie when he composed Kubla Khan. Why not get lost in the romance of Exmoor and You can decide for yourself whose footsteps you are walking in.
